I think it would be cool if there was some sort of ranking system that picks out the best player for a certain time period.
For example:
Player of the Day
Player of the Week
Player of the Month
Player of the Year
All aspects of the stats would be taken in account when the player is picked.
There could also be a little box on the front page that showed the names of the players who received the awards.
Discuss.
How about a map of the day on the front page? Random map selected from the collections would be cool.
I was allied with Nova in a game TODAY.
Actually, Min, the reason I'd like the map of the day is because that's the only way the majority of the people are ever going to look at our maps. Not many people want to browse through collections upon collections, and even then they only give the maps a glance. If they see one map a day up on the front page perhaps they'll say, "Hey, this map looks cool, I'll try it."
Perhaps that way we can get more people to play on fresh maps.
wouldn't it be more appropriate to perhaps running a spawner with your map collection in the folder .. or have someone run one for you if you can't that can spawn your maps constantly so that people can get a chance to playtest them rather than seeing them .... seeing how pretty a map looks is not really going to be relevant to how the map plays. perhaps some consideration should be given to this? ... I'm sure there are some folks out there that would host a novas maps only spawner, or a acro's maps only spawner, or whatever .... sj's new bot would do that no problem

That would work, too. Perhaps 1/5 auto-spawned games could be from the map collections. Something along those lines.

You having said that, I think having a map of the day would be easiest.
I personally don't like Xenocide's idea only because: 1) The current ranking system can be exploited and just doesn't work that great, and 2) The top ranking players really don't change all that often or would go back and forth between the same people. It would be better to just have some sort of recognition for the winners of a tournament or something.
I will say that I do like Nova's idea of having a thumbnail picture displayed on the front of winbolo.net of a random map, and having it change every time the page is reloaded.
I have to agree with Nova, I think that a map of the day would make people pay more attention, howver only if it wasn't random and had comments on how the play is and how much pillwaring places are there, etc.
Personnally, I like both ideas quite a bit except for these changes:
1) I think the ranking system should only be for the day and week, not year or month
2) The random map thingy should only spit out maps with a fairly high average rating.
Those are both really good ideas though.

for the player of the day and week, ect, we should use wonkas play average page....oh...hang on...i just looked for it to give the link and its not there......crap.....well.......i think theres another and we can use that one.......it prevents ppl from raping their stats. And map of the day should probably just take maps from player's collections and show the newest ones (that have ok ratings) ....the only problem with this is that ppl will rate their own maps and constantly re-upload them......so i think in order for something to be map of the day it should have had to be out there for a certain amount of time.... just ma 2 cent....
The problem with having only fairly highly rated maps picked is that the majority of the maps have not been rated, and the ones that are rated might not fit in with everyone else's opinion of that map (for instance, I give CT3 a 10/10 rating and JoeBlow HATES CT3.)
Just have it be randomly selected. No bias, nadda.
After hearing people's comments, I think it would be better to throw out the monthly and yearly awards and just have the daily and weekly.
Also,
There would be a lot of different people receiving the awards, because everyone plays winbolo at different times.
I would really like to see happen, but I don't know enough about programming to put it into action. I know there are many people in the community that are capable, so I'm sure we can make this work.
Perhaps not on the nav bar but on the news section? Or if that's a stupid-ass idea, just have a map of the day page.
