WinBolo3D Screen Shots

Mar 29, 2004 14:52 WinBolo3D Screen Shots
A friend of mine has been working on a 3D interface to WinBolo. Its still in the early stages of development but he OK'd me to post a few screen shots. Please be patient why the page loads, it contains 2Mb of images.

At this stage we are aiming to run it through the brain interface or maybe in the log viewer.

kinna k00l. But i won't play it. I like my bolo in classic 2-D.

Is this just for viewing lets say game logs, or is it meant to be used for gameplay when its finished?
Mar 30, 2004 00:21
That hasn't been determined. Its not in a playable state, so we haven't determined it is even playable using a 3D view.

To anyone that is interested, Bolo tried something similar. Keep in mind that this is back in 1995.

Very cool. Props to your friend for getting this far in his project.

i'm interested in seeing the lgm.
Mar 30, 2004 14:35
holy crap dude...thats dope!! I bet even my friends who said the graphics for winbolo suxed will like it!
Mar 30, 2004 14:41
I think we should be able to play like this if we want.......like use it as a skin (or borg) so other people can still play 2d while others go 3d.......it would be SO COOL............tons of new ppl would say no longer that bolo has bad graphix.....
Mar 30, 2004 14:46 Nice
Just thought I'd add to the long list of appreciative customers here. WinBolo3D is looking rather tasty. Even if we get it for playback purposes alone it would make watching games even more of a delight.

Imagine tournaments, not sure how big a file from a match would be but it would be good to watch the competing players as a spectator. As per usual though, this will just be one idea from many that will be made between now and its hopefull release date. Has a target release date been set Elvis or is it to soon to even speculate?

Ess-K

I'd like to see it too. In the Bolo 3d, they were bigger than the tanks.

Also, if he doesn't mind telling you, what 3D program is he using?I can't tell from the picture because so many of them look the same...
Mar 30, 2004 23:39
yeah! i wanna be q the ace photographer! muahahahahahahha!!!

(and later make it into a borg too!)

btw make da lgms like half the size of the tank like in normal winbolo, i dont like seeing lgms towering in the sky above me :D

Yeah, accuracy would be lost in being able to move your cursor to a certain square as I'm presuming they would become skewed from any other angle than top-down.

As others have mentioned, I think it would be nice just for spectating values, either in live games or for the log viewer.

this is definately a good first step in bringing winbolo to par with the rest of the gaming world.

however, as nice and pretty as it is, it will never be true 3d without a whole new physical element of Height

ie, hills and ditches... stuff like tanks take longer going up hills than going down.... shots fired from the top of a hill travel farther than those that arnt...

and of course, how do mines effect elevated grounds? like if you make a mine crater on the top of a cliff over looking water, what happens?

all sorts of stuff will need to be seriously looked at...

unfortunately, in my opinion, the 2d physics of winbolo are nowhere near perfection, so a 3d virtual realm perhaps wont happen for bolo during my lifetime

just some crazy thoughts from a bolo thug

ideally, what id like to see is making winbolo played as is within a 3d graphical atmosphere. by "as is" i mean, the game play and the balance of bolo.

topographical view (the way it is now) should be one of the modes that the user can choose. in another mode, you could have first person tank view with a button that flips to back view, third person tank view (this would take the camera back a bit and a little higher up, maybe say 45 degrees and at a definate length from the back of the tank, and right and left arrow key would swivel it around), and "free camera" mode which basically means the player can move the camera anywhere they want.

one important thing that just pops into mind, is that the distance that can be seen in topographical view should be the maximum distance that can be seen in any other view, so as not to give a certain mode an advantage (being able to see across the map to the other side)

Its been awhile since a post on this topic, any progress being made? Or did you scrap the idea?
May 19, 2004 23:17
sort of like mac with it's viewer and you could watch other tanks going and you could find them, like when they're traveling in the deep water you could track 'em down, except now in 3d! Except isn't just going to be to view the game after it has ended?
