Linbolo and Elvis

Mar 30, 2004 00:56 Linbolo and Elvis
I assume everyone else here plays on Windows, since I haven't seen too many people complain about the lack of Linux and/or Mac versions of the game.

I expected a Linux version to be released at the same time, as it appears Elvis/John Morrison is using compatibility libraries. Assuming 1.14 is mostly the same code as 1.13, he would only have to type "make" on a Linux machine to build the binary. Possibly for Mac, it might be a few days work to port it.

If Elvis can't get the darn thing to build on his machine and/or needs help getting it ported, I'd be happy to help as I have both development environments.

Along with commercial software development, I also am a free software contributer. I belive Elvis has every right to make money from Winbolo, but at the same time, if he doesn't plan on developing it professionally (making money, support his product, fix bugs), Winbolo will be consigned to the same fate as Mac bolo. There are probably a few people here who would be able to contribute back to the project, and probably somebody who would port Bolo to Mac OSX.

Interesting historical post from 1999:
http://groups.google.com/groups?selm=772esg%24p6d%241%40nnrp1.dejanews.com

Closing point: I presently have no plans for making this an open source
project. One of my primary goals is to gain some experience and I can hardly
get that if other people are doing the work for me can I?

There's been a lot of people who have tried to develop a Windows version--since at least 1994--and I congratulate John Morrison on coming out with a version which is complete. I wonder if he still has the same sentiment, that he doesn't want people to help with the project even after 5 years?

Great observations. I suspect it's a 'It's my baby, hands off' kinda situation. That's too bad, because some people here have the talent, time, and will to iron out the creases in this game.

I would personally love a port OS X. It might attract some old Boloers also.

I’d speculate nearly 99% of current players solely use windows to play ‘winbolo’. There’s been several delays in the linbolo releases compared to winbolo and instances where just the linboloDS (dedicated server) is released.

It would be superb to see linbolo kept up to pace with winbolo and to have a Mac OS port. However, I see far more possibilities for linbolo then that, with the many flavors of *nix it opens a far larger pool of potential players. But I haven’t seen any effort put into any of these. I’ve said this before; I believe linbolo is bolo’s future!

My highly opinionated views are;
When Elvis no longer wishes to develop win/linbolo he should release the source and let others take it from there, rather then choking the life out of the game. Has that point been reached? Not in my opinion. With Winbolo.net and the new players we seem to slowly be getting… These are nana-steps, but at least their in the right direction.
I see the lack of attention in linbolo much as a choker on the game’s potential.

And there’s my two cents worth.

unless you know the integral workings of elvis's mind, I don't think your qualified enough to be making these statements.... Linbolo will be dealt with in good time, Elvis has blessed me with some information in that regard, I'm confident he has it under control. Elvis has this tendency to plan ahead .... usually so far ahead that suggestions we make/want will get implemented 2-3 versions later than when we asked for them. Such is the world of software development.

ps, 99 percent of the users use windows to play winbolo .... becuase microsoft has 80+ percent of the market share. Saying that they "soley" use windows however is a bit of a stretch ... I'm sure maddmaxx and ren and acro have linux loaded on 3 other machines besides the ones they use to play winbolo ............ ya ............

Well king Min-alot, if you’d had paid any attention; you would know that nothing I said requires any foreknowledge from Elvis. And I am uniquely qualified to state my own opinions, now if you don’t like them, well then that’s just to bad.

Since ‘winbolo’ is designed for windows as that is what ‘win’bolo stands for…
But hell I don’t feel like letting your flame bait get anymore of what you wanted. Hence I’ll weigh all your grumose like responses accordingly…

I agree. And lots of new Boloers too. That OS is gaining market share, and its online share has always been well above market. Plus, I've read stats that Mac users are more likely to register shareware
