great comebacks in winbolo history

Apr 28, 2004 01:29 great comebacks in winbolo history
I'm not one to come into a forum or to have a website with advice to players who are newbies or are lower level players, since my game isn't among the eilte. But I want to offer some advice to people on how to battle back in a 2x2 game when you're down to only 1 quad, a few pills and a few bases.

DOUBLE TEAM PILLS!!

when you and your teammate both shoot a red pill together, not only do you kill it quickly, but the one who doesn't get most of the bullets can get in there and take it quickly. Plus if an opponent is right there he won't be able to fix it without getting his lgm killed. And here's the kicker: you don't have to use a wall or one of your own pills to help block for it, so you don't put the few valuable pills you have left at any risk! When you double team pills, you basically leave any nearby opponent tanks handcuffed.

TAKE YOUR BOAT BACK TO YOUR BASE!! DON'T HOPELESSLY DRIVE THROUGH RED PILLS!!

When you're behind in the game, every millisecond counts. As opposed to when you're winning and trying to just put the last nail in the coffin, it seems like you have plenty of time and don't need to rush anything. Every second you're away from your quad you're one second closer to losing. If you can't get to your quad by land safely because of all the red pills, then stop trying to get there by land! Take your boat AROUND the land, by water, get to your quad unharmed, and you're ready to go. Yes, the shortest distance between 2 points is a straight line, but when there are tons of red things shooting you, you just can't get there.

For some people the 2 strategies I just mentioned are already known and used. But for some others they are not. I find it frustrating when I'm in a 2x2 and we get behind and pinned to one quad and a couple of bases and pills (whether my fault or theirs) and my teammate doesn't know these time-saving and thus game-saving strategies. And you can't tell him/her what to do during play, because you simply don't have time to stop and type. Every millisecond counts.

I hope alot of people get to read this and use these strategie in these situations in games.

also, if anyone has anything to add about what you should do when you're trying to come back from one quad in a 2x2, let's hear it.

I find I need to change my pattern of thinking from offense to defense. This may sound like, well, 'duh', but if you're suddenly forced in to one quad with 5 out of 16 pills; especially after a part of the game where you were doing well, you've got to mentally slow down or switch gears in your head. Slow it down, and really concentrate on the enemy's lgm pattern. Line up your pills so that one reinforces the other, but so that their pills don't wipe yours out if you come within range in order to 'snipe' an lgm. You can't advance if you've got 2 pills against their 6, or it would be reckless to try it. Instead, let them make the moves, and watch carefully how and when they send their lgms. In a 2x2, losing one lgm is a huge handicap. There have been games where people have played a little recklessly and wound up with only 5 pills after 10 minutes, and then they stick with those 5 for another hour....why?
Because they slowed down, concentrated, put 20 layers of bubble-wrap around their lgm, so to speak, and dug in. I remember a 3x3 we were losing. We were down to a quad and a few pills. But UD dug in, caused an lgm massacre, and we came back and won it. Yeehaw!

I remember a 2v2... me n kax vrs blue n sky....we were down to one quad and a couple pills....but we just played defensive, and sky got killed by kax with about 3 pills, and kax went off spiking through the trees, and we won.

I've never been the best player around, but I could hang on pretty doggedly at times and even managed to swing a couple of games. One critical thing is to know who you're playing against, and what his style is. If you're down to one quad, it makes a huge difference to know whether either opposing player is the sort to try boat spikes. If so, and if the other team is carrying 2-3 pills, it's worth your time to hide in the trees along the back of your quad, scroll out, and wait.

I also find that it's useful always to carry a pill, at least if you're confident in your ability to avoid getting killed. If you have 5-6 pills and they're all arrayed in an arc around your territory, you're seriously fuxed if a spike or two get planted. At least if you're carrying a pill, you can do a quick take and/or use it to refuel.

Finally, pay attention to pill counts. Even if you're down 10-6 or 11-5, it's very easy to come back if the other team insists on putting all of their pills in the line. If they do, pick up 1-2 pills and some ammo, then take a boat around to a neighboring quad. Plant the pills in a defensible position, then rape out a couple of bases. If you do it right, not only do you get another corner, but you can make it very difficult for the other team to maintain part of their pill line (which is now sandwiched between your two quads). At the very least, you make the other team react to you for a change. Better to go down swinging...

Most of this discussion is geared toward CT3. I've heard rumors of other maps being played on occasion, but much like UFO citings, there's little concrete evidence.

Are the analytical, intellectual conversations about the game and its strategy too much for you to handle? no problem, i'll water it down for you...

Every millisecond always counts no matter what point of the game you're in.

lol, yesterday, i took a boat to my enemie's base and spiked the muthafukka with 3 pills.
May 02, 2004 01:38
'Course, you had the other 12 pills at your main base..... :D

yea, but still, trying out that tactic and getting used to using it could improve me.
