Help Me!!!!

May 19, 2004 20:54 Help Me!!!!
Well, I guess I would through my inquiry out there to knowledgeble members of the Winbolo.net society, all five of them.

How do you get the operating system onto a blank hard drive when there is no other hard disk on the system? Basicly, what do you do to start a new computer? It would be nice if someone included what and how to add IDE, AGP, and PCI devices after the install.

Also, should I remove all my IDE, AGP, and PCI devices (except the hard drive) before I put XP on the drive?

Need some help here people, thought you guys could help.

Add some replies if you need more information.

Yes I know about the typoez.

First determine if the system boots from the CD, or if it boots only from the floppy.

well, there are a number of different ways. If your running windows xp, the best way would probably be to simply put the windows xp cd in the cd drive and turn the computer on ... when it says "press any key to boot from cd" press any key. And then follow the instructions. But there are a number of different ways to do it.

no, don't remove any hardware.

p.s. If you join irc, I can give you better instructions.

Is it partioned and formatted? I don't know much about xp or later os's but I know for win 9x you have to first get the os bootdisk and partion then format the hdd...

sui got the skin...
May 19, 2004 22:40

Acro, it boots from CD and then from Floppy. I can change that though.

When I put in an MS-DOS disk and the XP CD It gave me that command line (A:\) but it wouldn't let me access the CD or hard drive because it is and invalid drive request.
May 20, 2004 02:38
Your system may not be detecting the HD. I never did figure out how to overcome that stupid 'no fixed disks present' error. Does anyone know the tricks to overcome failed HD detection?

On a side note, I have the old case. It's called 'REN Microcomputers' and I'm thinking of putting an awesome system inside the shitty old case, just for fun.
Heck, nobody'll steal it 'cause it'll look like the 120 MHZ dinosaur it was!
May 20, 2004 02:47
Thanks for trying to help Acro, thanks anyway.
May 20, 2004 03:01
dang, when is this going to go off-topic? I'm sick of waiting.
May 20, 2004 03:23
Hey acro, one prob. with your old shitty case look-nice computer inside is that probly it won't line up because the old motherboard is probly not an atx mb (atx mb have all ports in back usb, two ps/2 ports, built in sound card, etc.) so you would have to cut into the back of the case to make it fit right and still might run into probs.
May 20, 2004 03:36
Yea, someone else mentioned that. I can use a PCI slot for a USB PCI card, and perhaps other slots for devices that would normally be ported at the top of the board. I dunno, I'm gonna have to mess around and have a lil' fun. I will probably have to adapt a newer front power switch to fit the old switch housing and who knows what else. If you have any other stumbling blocks to predict, by all means...... :D
May 20, 2004 04:30
Pleaz to be a help! :D Yeah you would have to get a momentary switch for it, a standard momentary circle button should fit, also is this a desktop or tower? If it's a desktop you might have even more trouble mounting the mb, my old compaq and a brand called bravo had it's on mounting, well compaq usually makes their parts special, but anyways have fun at it! Also you should check out the forums at www.xoxide.com click the the forums tab and it should direct you to the forums and signup, great computer modding and general site, you probly get more responses to your comp. there. (I'm sui_winbolo there)

Great, TY. I just hope that 'suicide' doesn't also apply to your computer - building techniques. :D

don't put the msdos floppy in, just put in the xp cd .. it should boot from that. if it doesn't, its not detecting your cdrom drive properly

Thanks Min. Doesn't help but thanks. I think that my XP is just the uprgarde, not a full version. So I have to get a full version. Man, EXPENSIVE!!!

Hey, I'm kinda piggybacking on this topic, but could anyone recommend a quality Athlon 64 compatible mainboard? I'd like to try the swanky new CPU. :D

Acro, go to www.msicomputer.com, quality MSI Board, all of them. Then go to www.newegg.com to buy them, quality and affordability.

If you get an error going to MSI's site, click on the first option site. You will understand.

Acro, I reccomend the gigabyte boards, heard alot of great things about them and I'm planning to get one when I save up enough money for a new rig. (amd64 rig! :D )
May 24, 2004 20:35

Why???
May 24, 2004 22:51
Generic made of crap company maybe? Rely on MSI. Decent prices, good warranty, and they last longer than you will!!!!

No, I don't work for MSI.

Not officially afilliated with Micro Star International.
