How do you make custom controls?

Jul 07, 2004 21:02 How do you make custom controls?

Yup. Open up WinBolo and press Cntrl+K. However, I don't recommend setting just any keys that you want. You aren't left-handed, are you?

If you're right-handed, then you can set your keys to this:

#a & d -- turn tank
# w -- accelerate
# s -- slow down
# Kpd. + -- extend gun range
# Kpd. Enter -- diminish gun range
# Kpd. 3 -- lay mine
# Kpd. 7 -- tank view
# Kpd. 9-- pillbox view

(Taken off of Puppy Love's strategy guide, with some minor modifications.)

Those are just the keys I use... it allows you to drive with your left hand (which will take some practice if you're right-handed. If you're left-handed, ask Acro [who I believe is left-handed] what his keys are.), while your right hand is on the mouse. This is the basic setup used by just about all the good players in WinBolo because it allows you to multitask.

Just FYI: Kpd. = keypad. The last 5 functions I use the Keypad for. This might not be the absolute BEST setup to have, so don't change automatically. Wait for someone else to tell you if this is the key setup you should have or not.

(Make sure that you don't just open up WinBolo, go to "practice" and open up a map.)

If you don't like those controls try this

forward-up
left-left
right-right
slow down- back

fire- space

tank view-t
pillbox view-p

increase gunsight range-+/=
decrease gunsight range-_/-

Note, autoslowdown makes the tank slow down when you release the forward button, with it off you keep going until you press slow down.

Also note, to turn on gunsight hit Ctrl+G

Also enable auto scrolling by Ctrl+G

Toggle Pill labels with Ctrl+P
Toggle Base labels with Ctrl+B

Vengeance, the only problem with those controls is that if you're right-handed that you cannot have your hand on the mouse and drive at the same time. Being able to multi-task like that makes you a better player.

Another setup can be found here:

http://winbolo.netfirms.com/keysetup.shtml

Nova has his setup close to how I have mine. I switch the pill view/tank view and the gun range, since I need more control for gun range (and I can control my index finger better then my pinky).

I also mine with the tab key.

While we are on the subject, is it possible to have more than one way to do a certain action (like accelerate)? You see, I started out playing with the default key setup, and have never gotten out of the habit. if i want to spike, or just use the mouse and steer at the same time, I can move my left hand over to "O" and "P" and use my right for the mouse. The only problem with that is if i get hit with a bullet, I stop accelerating and usually get my lgm killed or my own tank, which isn't good, especially in pillwar situations, where i can really fuck things up. I was wondering if it would be possible for me to make "9" the accelerate key, and "0" the barking key, so i could steer and accelerate when im going in for a spike, then when im doing shooting, mining, and other stuff where i don't need my lgm, i can go like normal.

Perhaps there's a borg out there that can do JUST THAT (very simple borg) or not even a borg, but it could be incorporated into the game.... this would be very good and wouldn't change the game, but it would help me be a less crappy player.

Btw I used to use a borg with a pillbox rebuild button, but the borg as quite annoying and embarrassing, not to mention not always useable.

HELP ME PLEASE, DON'T IGNORE, THIS, AT LEAST READ IT AND REPLY!

FORGET WHAT VENAGENCE SAID! The most efficient (almost!) key setup can be found on FireIce's website, here. It lets you use one hand for shooting and moving, and the other for mouse-type stuff. The only change from FireIce's setup I would recommend is that instead of using the arrow keypad for scrolling, you instead use the numeric keypad to the FAR right of the keyboard, keys 4, 8, 6, and 2 (this way, you can still use your right hand for scrolling, but you do not have to move it so far, hence this is more efficient.) I also use the "0" and the "." keys on the numeric keypad for tank/pillbox mode, I find this alot more comfortable. Btw, I also use the "3" key on the numeric keypad to plant mines.

And Q-man, just fucking switch to Fi's setup. It's a pain in the ass at first (I know, I also had to switch), but in the end it is much more efficient. Well, better than getting your LGM killed all the time anyways  .

I use the arrows to move, A to zoom out, Z to zoom in, space to shoot, Number pad to scroll ( 4,8,6,2 ), 1 to view tank, 2 to view pillview, tab for mines. I also have auto slowdown on with a framte rate of 30.

UH........Use FireIce's key setup........anything else, is JUST A TOY!

from my website.

keysetup: The default key setup is not very good, a good key setup has to have a few elements, one of these is the ability to drive with one hand, and mouse with the other hand this will allow you to release your builder for a pill plant or repair while still maneuvering or dodging this is required for you to become a good player if you stay with default keys you will be unable to move while repairing, this will allow people to know when you will release your builder and kill it almost every time. another thing a good key setup requires is the ability to easily scroll, I personally scroll more than I drive scrolling allows you to see what's going on around you. its very satisfying to know someone doesn't scroll manually and then use this knowledge to sneak up on them and kill them while they are trying a pill take. my personal keys are e,d,s,f for movement t for tank view, g for pillview, shift for mining, space for shoot. these are all on one hand, so I can mine, shoot, drive, and change views all with one hand, all at the same time if I choose. the other hand is keypad 8,4,6,5 for manual scrolling (this is were my hand rests while I'm not mousing) keypad + and enter for changing gunsight range. I chose these because they are huge, and hard to miss if I need to flail my fingers about looking for them, and because I can actually hit these keys while my hand is on the mouse, which is also useful. I chose the keypad because its closer to the mouse than the arrows making less arm movement to switch between them.

Guys, obviously you don't have the immense hands that I do neither the small keyboard that I have. This set-up is one mouse, one keyboard hand figures. I didn't say he should use that set up just that its a suggestion.

I seem to remember that lancelot or lrl or one of the l vets once told me his keysetup in irc... the only thing i remember abt it was that it was very interesting...
Jul 09, 2004 00:27
I believe lancelot uses the 0 KPD key to turn or something like that... he uses his thumb to scroll with the arrow keys... very interesting, indeed.

Quite strange :S.

I think Min's is the same setup _sloth used to use. I remember getting _sloth to switch from the defaults, but he altered the setup that I was using, and still use now.

Movement: edsf, no auto-slowdown. edsf was better for me, since I used to type messages more often and wanted to keep my left hand in typing position. No auto-slowdown because I wanted to control how fast I decelerated, and it was impossible to pill-rub effectively without it.

Gun sight: t g. At one point, I felt that I should be able to control all major functions outside of scrolling and mouse use with one hand. Using the kp for this is probably slightly better, but I'm proficient enough at this setup. I think the trade-off of being able to adjust my sights while holding down the 2 scroll keys (winbolo's auto-scrolling doesn't feel right) vs. being a little less precise with my sight is acceptable.

Tank/pill view: 2 3

Scroll: kp 2 4 6 8. Used to be the arrow keys, but after playing other games, I've gotten accustomed to using the key pad, and it's closer to the mouse.

Mines: shift. I was never that comfortable using the a key for mining while evading an oncoming tank, but I liked the ability to be able to mine with my left or right hand.

Shoot: space bar

I started out just using edsf and the arrow keys ... I don't think I even had the rest of the keys set to anything or they were defaults ... after I started getting a bit better and realized pillview/tankview are important, I moved them to a place were I can easily drop my finger onto one of them very quickly .... the keypad thing came later after I discovered that I didn't like were my aimer keys were.

poor kid. Asks if he can set-up his own controls and he gets this huge debate/conversation over which ones are best.
Jul 11, 2004 03:02
Lucky kid, if you ask me. He gets to see so many different viewpoints all in one thread .
Jul 11, 2004 22:54
My key setup is:

driving - wsad
shoot - space
mine - tab
gun range - + and - (technically it's = and -)
tank view/pill view - 1/2
scroll (here's where it gets interesting ) up - r/down - f/left - q/ right - e(just look at the keyboard and it will make sense)

I also use auto slowdown. The reason for the wacky scroll keys is so I can do almost anything with my left hand, and use my mouse with my right (I'm right handed) 8)
