delete ct3?

Here is something Elvis posted to #winbolo on total maps used with wbn:

Elvis +----------------------+------+
Elvis | Chew Toy 3 | 7884 |
Elvis | Everard Island | 3110 |
Elvis | JonnyWar I | 1798 |
Elvis | Baringi | 1481 |
Elvis | hathec | 1358 |
Elvis | Chew Toy 3.2 Filled | 1309 |
Elvis | DH-Oil Rig | 1200 |
Elvis | Cognitive Dissonance | 1144 |
Elvis | Dream Soda V | 1126 |
Elvis | Chew Toy 3.2 | 1097 |

And Fermat has these stats:
Most Common Maps
1192 Chew Toy 3
251 smallball
170 JonnyWar I
150 hathec
83 Cognitive Dissonance
50 Chew Toy 3.2 Filled
49 Skew Toy 3
48 Etaka
45 Chew Toy 3.2
44 Skew Toy 4

So it seems players just don't have a clue about other maps... so I say we delete ct3* (including filled and .2) from our lives... forever.

I'll put up a full stats post shortly.
Jul 12, 2004 15:42
And now done.

So if there wasn't CT3 what map would become the next most played for strict tournaments?
Jul 12, 2004 18:32
Sure sheeps, go ahead and delete the most popular map of all time, that makes perfect sense.

While you're at it, delete smallball, too many of us play that and get too much fun from it.

Elvis, to answer your question, it's very obvious to me that the next most popular map would be StarIce.

oooo, snarky reply .. nice ...

Glad to hear you agree with me fi. Delete smallball? Heavens no, Ill take out that pesky starice first.

hrmm, perhaps just set a "limit" on the amount of chew's played each day?

Noble idea Sheepster, but people aren't going to stop playing chew to death, even if it is removed from sheepbot. In some player's minds, chew seems to be the benchmark map for guaging skill. I won't support or refute this idea, but for that reason and others, it will continue to be heavily played. I'd like to see a whole new roster of maps on the menu, but w/e.

I agree. And if you REALLY want people to stop playing Chew Toys, then the CT's must be replaced by something. Whoever designed CT did not do it to win a map-making contest, or to make something that looked cool. But when he made it, it replaced all the big huge asymmetrical slow maps that we played before then because that's all we knew. Then CTs come along (and Oil Rigs too I think) and bolo was revolutionized! What will be the next great revolutionary map in bolo? We'll have to see, but we shouldn't try and force anything. My guess is that it isn't baringi.

I just thought of a good idea: to promote the playing of other maps, how about we have a week (or maybe 2) where we eliminate the top 10 maps from the bots, to encourage the use of lesser-played maps. This way some other maps will get some good exposure, people will say "hey let's play this one, it's really cool", "yeah but have you heard of this one?" Oh, and we can eliminate anything with "chew toy" or "CT" in the name of the map :) What do you guys think? We can call it "map moratorium week 2004"
Jul 16, 2004 20:59
How about a Map of the Day feature on the front page of www.winbolo.net ? I've brought this up in the past... maybe it was someone else's idea, I dunno. But it would be nice to have... maybe someone'll be crazy enough to click on it and try it out.
Jul 16, 2004 21:23
I like MadScouts idea. We would all benefit from a 2 week no-top-ten-maps period :D.

This is nice and all, but it'd only be a slight suggestion to play a certain map. Banning the top 10 maps from the bots for a week would FORCE people to play new maps in games.
Jul 16, 2004 21:36
I was kinda thinking that we could have both...
Jul 16, 2004 22:03
I like both ideas.

Oh... well yes of course that's a good idea :)

Heh. I thought about my post and I guess I came across as "This is the ONLY idea that'll work", but I meant to endorse both ideas. Silly me.
Jul 17, 2004 01:56
or we could just ridicule anyone who's silly enough to start a chew toy 3 type map ..... which is my current plan ......

Forcibly blocking people from being able to start CT3 isn't a cool idea. If you're really serious about changing this trend, you need to start the maps up yourself (speaking to everyone here). You can also choose not to join the CT3 games.

Starting up the maps and getting people to play them is half the battle. I think one of the reasons we see so many people choose the same maps is because of the need to use bots on IRC (it's necessary for the average player without a separate server). If you're going to start a map, you have to remember the name of the map. As opposed to the old days of MacBolo where you would just open up your folder and choose one that had a cool sounding name. I think that's how I stumbled across a lot of my favorites.

Another idea might be to get some votes together among the non-CT3 supporters to see which maps play well in Winbolo (the maps I listed below are mostly from my MacBolo memories). From there, we could have one of the bots programmed to auto-reply to "Sheepbot suggest a good 2/4/6 player map". Keeping some consistency to the maps it suggests will help them become more familiar, and hopefully part of the average Winboloer's repertoire of maps to start. Maybe 6 maps per player number changed once a month?

Some of the maps I remember playing:
Various Slugfests: VII, XXVIII, XIX, XXIX.
Sluggo's classic 3x3 sized maps: Oryctolagus Cuniculi, Mutatis Mutandis, The Kill-Bot Factory, Copacabana, Brockman's Folly, Deep Elem, etc.
Starsearch
G-Spot
Even Steven
SFSC
Aliens (a little goofy, but different)
The Quick and the Dead
UMaine 2 - 42-1-2 (this one has those cool CBL start boxes)
UChicago CBL Map (more CBL boxes)
Porktabolopolis
Bolamic Jihad
Expletive

I remember having lots of fun games on 42-1-2!! I was hunched over the pathetic little macintosh computer in my Umaine dorm (in the dark of the middle of the night) glued to those games like a zombie. Eh...the good ol' days.

Goodies from my collection:

Scepter

(Nova) Shrunk in the Wash

http://winbolo.net/mapcollectioninfo.php?id=4888

(Nova) Three Megaton Nightmare

Twisty 7

Twisty

The only map I haven't played on that list is "Shrunk in the Wash", but I think it might play well. "Three Megaton Nightmare" is the third version of a map that I've had lots of fun playing on. All I did was add in loads of more trees and I made easier paths to the bases.

That is half the battle alright. Lately people have been loading maps other than chew toy 3 quite frequently. Mostly due to the presence of some older macbolo'ers (yourself, virgil) who start maps that are not chew toy 3. Unfortunatly due to the way winbolo has progressed, Chew toy 3 will always been the standard, how fast you can take down all the pills on chewtoy3 is a question asked frequently and used to guage "skill" who you can beat on chew toy 3 is also a large measure of skill, so what happens is the players overplay chew toy 3, and forget how to play other maps as effectively. We start to use a "precanned" strategy that works, rather than a universal strategy mindset that will allow for varying play on all maps. In alot of cases, you've got players that do the same thing on chew toy 3 almost every time. Some people spike with their first pill everytime (and in one person's case that I recall ... almost the same spot every time ) very predictable, some people try to vulture you, some people just grab their pills and plant their lines and march around behind their lines expecting something to happen. Some people *cough* take 5 pills, wander down into the other persons middle ground and pillline spike between the quads ...... *stare* ..... either way, these types of play only work on chew toy 3, and maps very similiar to chew. How you play chew toy 3 and how you play say for example ... slugfest 28 ... are very very different. What we need to do is force people onto maps like Mutanis Mandis for 3x3 games, slugfest IV, and other slugfests for 2x2, expanding people's sphere of influence, forcing people to think beyond the pillwar.
