Multiple Accounts

Jul 19, 2004 03:46 Multiple Accounts
Do people see the benefits of being able to link accounts together? Such that a player could play any number of accounts and have their scores ranked independently as well on a group level? One consideration would be not to allow players with linked accounts to play each other for ranking purposes.

Or is the whole point of having multiple accounts to remain anonymous so linking them would be a waste of time?

I'll take the second one for $100 bob! Yeah I think ppl just use them to just be anonymous, just to spice up the game thing whoa this newbie is really good when it turns out he is a vet. I don't know why you would cheat just to get a good ranking, thats pretty low to do that.

Let me make sure I understand you right: If I had 3 accounts: a "Mad Scout", a "Bizzaro Mad Scout", and a "Blue Mad Scout", then I would not be able to play one account against the other according to a new rule you'd implement?

As someone who has no other WBN account than this one, I'd love that!!!

It would of course rely on the player to link all their own accounts together.

I do agree with you, 1 person, 1 account would be what I would prefer although practically it doesn't work as well you want new players to be able to sign up freely.

ohh... it would done under each individual player's own initiative. So, the honor system? And you know how honest most winbolo players are... >:)

Unless you can think of a good/reliable way of figuring it out automatically. IP might be one way but it would prevent people from playing from behind proxies/shared internet connections.

Wonka and Min already fought that battle with the IP and MAC addresses.
One way might to enable the use of one email address/IM screen name for multiple accounts, then automatically link it that way.

I play with many account/nicks, as I have since I played bolo. I started out changing nicks cuz I suxed so bad... what do you know... it's still a good reason. I would like the idea of creating a 'group' account to poll my info.

There will always be ways to 'beat' the system though, so I dont think anything should be forced through in an effort to catch "cheaters". It wont work and it's not worth the effort to try.

The option should be optional by the player, but the default setup should link nicks with same email (so this also means the change email functionality should be working). Going by IP sounds nifty but there are many many ways to get around this, many people play from home and work for example, thus having 2 IP locations.

If you want to see who is playing themselves, we just need to see a game history and judge for ourselfs, and have a ladder ranking system.

I think that games that have 2 players from the same IP in them, should have their stats discarded in regards to ranking .... there is never any reason for 2 people on the same IP to play a ranked game in my opinion. The chances of that occuring are low enough that the gain outweights the snivelling that may occur from people saying "oh, my buddy came over and we wanted to play a ranked LAN game" ... its like ... uh ... get over it. There are other more forceful ways to deal with it, but the winbolo community is not setup to allow fullscale changes of that nature ..... Could have one main account, and allow players to create alias's under that account for those who like changing things around alot. The anonymous arguement is moot simply becuase anyone who has a memory can simply remeber the IP address's of players and then recall exactly who any player they are playing is. Then there is players such as myself, who record every IP as well, Sticks built a little script or something awhile ago to parse out all the join/quit messages in IRC which can be used to determine the identities of any players that may wish to remain anonymous. If you want to be anonymous, don't turn on winbolo.net

Min, umm ... never say never. What if I chose to start playing ranked games? It wouldn't be overly fair to me *or* you to have both our ranks disregarded because we have the same IP. There are people who live together, brothers, father/daughter, husband/wife, bf/gf that play, and have the same IP. There should be allowances for that sort of thing. So, unless I read what you said wrong, I don't agree with you on the fact that people with the same IP's should have their ranked games disregarded.

Liz, I believe he meant that if two players with the same IP were in the game at the same time, not if two players with the same IPs play different games. If I somehow mis-read what you said, I apologize in advance.

But that would still mean that for example, min and I couldn't beat up on people or be on opposite teams (I'm am not entierly sure on how the ranking system works for teams) nor could we beat up on eachother, so it would in reality limit us to only playing other people, not that I enjoy playing against Min, he's a meanie ;) it's just an example. So say for example, I started playing ranked games, and min started playing all the time again and we got high in the rank (again just an example) we would not be able to compete against eachother for rank, correct?

I don't want to make it seem as if I'm ignoring you, but I have nothing to say.

Its also not fair to us to have some punk using the same computer to play themselves to pump their ranking.

I don't think so .... in our particular situation, you hate winbolo and won't play it anyways, so .. what the frick is the big deal? .. there isn't one in our case. What I'm saying is sure some people will snivel, but it makes it alot harder for people to cheat, there should be other things implemented as well, but in this case I believe the gain outweights the risk.

oh ya .... not to mention in our case our isp gives us 2 ip's so I could simply give my computer one, your computer the other, and we could play ranked games anyways ...... so why is it your complaining again? ... you just want to make me look bad and rant at you? .... you don't like winbolo, and you only play vs people who you know you can beat..... so.......

I have been suggesting this for a little while now.... yes it would be very good..... we would be able to get a more accurate "active players" stat. along with other things like people knowing who someone is rather then asking, in a game, "who is that?" and having the big guessing contest. Also, for team matches, people could join the match on a dif. account than what was actually originally joined to the team, rather than having to go check what account it's under and having to go change it and blah blah... (even though team matches aren't really played that much anyway). If a person has started a new account just cuz they feel like it, or because they lost on all their other ones... people can go see how good the person really is.... and then when the 1v1 diaries get implemented, they can see who they lost so much too.

I haven't read any of the rest of the post either than the topic and a little bit of elvis' post, so i apologize if this has already been said...
