n00bs would only be banned if they attempted to do something destructive to games/servers/Relay Chat.

Both sides may have too many allies already. Or, both sides may be unsure if their own allies would want another teammate. Or, the pillwar may be at a turning point and no one wants to take the time to integrate another teammate while trying to save their base. Or, the players you selected to ally have their alliance preference set to 'ignore' so that they aren't distracted by the pop-up window. (better players will do this). Don't expect a person you allied in a previous game to ally you in another game automatically if you arrive in the middle of it. (take heed, Terminator :D ) I probably haven't covered all the examples, but you get the idea.

Oh wow, addbot, you described what every open game is, it ends up being a small group of vets say 2-4 against 12-14 newbies, or 4 vets split up into two groups against all newbies, its crazy, even though they aren't very good, all of that mass allying adds up and is way too much to handle if they constantly attack you, but if they ignore their base, then it is a fairly easy game, but if half protect and other half go suicidel then its nearly impossible unless you get a good spike and you keep your lgm.

newbies often run around like chickens with their heads cut off when you spike with 2 or 3 pills (theyve never heard of pilltakes or lgm sniping)

Opens bring in newbies, and Winbolo needs as much of them as it can get (except I would prefer not the preteen crowd the Winbolo community seems to be plagued with lately).

Amen to the latter point, although noobs aren't the only ones who make games obnoxious -- vets with fragile egoes are arguably worse. Still, I've never been convinced that open games are necessary to recruit new players. Most players I knew at Swarthmore never went through that stage. In some ways learning in strict is like learning to drive on a car with a manual transmission: harder at first, but at least you don't have bad habits to unlearn later on.

Also, with the Culture of Crap present in open games (message spamming, allying everyone, etc.), it's no wonder it takes a while to teach people manners. (If they ever learn, which is not a given.)

The fundamental problem is that there aren't enough players, so open games tend to occur at the expense of strict games, rather than in addition to them. The tragedy is that the obnoxious players are usually the ones who stick around, perhaps because holding a job and making friends are options unavailable to them.
