DURANGO, Colorado (Reuters) - A Colorado judge ordered two teen-age girls to pay about $900 (480 pounds) for the distress a neighbour said they caused by giving her home-made cookies adorned with paper hearts.

The pair were ordered to pay $871.70 plus $39 in court costs after neighbour Wanita Renea Young, 49, filed a lawsuit complaining that the unsolicited cookies, left at her house after the girls knocked on her door, had triggered an anxiety attack that sent her to the hospital the next day.

Taylor Ostergaard, then 17, and Lindsey Jo Zellitte, 18, paid the judgment on Thursday after a small claims court ruling by La Plata County Court Judge Doug Walker, a court clerk said on Friday.

The girls baked cookies as a surprise for several of their rural Colorado neighbours on July 31 and dropped off small batches on their porches, accompanied by red or pink paper hearts and the message: "Have a great night".

The Denver Post newspaper reported on Friday that the girls had decided to stay home and bake the cookies rather than go to a dance where there might be cursing and drinking.

It reported that six neighbours wrote letters entered as evidence in the case thanking the girls for the cookies.

But Young said she was frightened because the two had knocked on her door at about 10:30 p.m. and run off after leaving the cookies.

She went to a hospital emergency room the next day, fearing that she had suffered a heart attack, court records said.

The judge awarded Young her medical costs, but did not award punitive damages. He said he did not think the girls had acted maliciously but that 10:30 was fairly late at night for them to be out.

Don't be so quick to judge this woman. Having mild anxiety myself, I understand the literal horror that could arise out of everyday things that people such as yourselves wouldn't think twice about.

I also don't think its fair to judge an entire country based on the actions of 2 teenage girls.

Sorry, If she's that unstable, she needs to be in a home where she can receive care. I stand by my assessment. Gold Digger. It's all about the money. I work in people's homes almost every day. Believe me when I tell you: I know people. I know them well. The moment you set foot on someone's property, you have automatically accepted an unknown amount of liability. You are a money sponge to be squeezed. Why do you think my employer requires that I carry four million dollars of liability insurance? If there is a broken TV or missing article in someone's home and I come within 10 yards of it, they can say I broke it or stole it. They will complain and be compensated. They'll get a new TV or whatever! Think this is B.S.? I've been victim to a half-dozen such incidents. So has every other service person who works in people's homes in America. Why do you think Identity Fraud is so popular? Because it PAYS. People aren't stupid. They know how to milk anything that can be milked. Dishonesty, deceit, unethical behavior and other wrongs are of no concern to them.

Who's the victim here? The girls who made the cookies. They've been victimized. They've been cleverly extorted out of a large sum of money as well as been subject to court time and costs and the stress of the whole ridiculous ordeal. If a burglar breaks into your home and your dog bites him, he can sue and win lots of money from you. This is America. Having fun?

Lesson: Stay away from people's homes and cars unless you have no other choice.

jhood, thats true, it makes sense she was afriad, but she SUED the girls. They had even offered to pay her medical bills before she sued them. Im not sure if this article says that, but i could link to another that does.

Further more, in court one of the girls cried at the verdict, obviously distressed. I say that girls sues the "lady" (bitch) for everything she has.
