I know there are several hockey fans in the winbolo community. Some of whom I really don't like all that much, but I mourn with you today. This really sucks. :evil:
Well, I must not be one of those community members, 'cause I had to check google to find out what this post was about. :D
It might take awhile to get fans back if they do somehow get their shit together for a season next year. I don't have the attendance figures for the league but I can imagine teams that did crappy and that play in low population-density areas might fold.
But it almost seems as neither side is to blame for this. One side you have the players that make more money in a 5-season contract than a regular Joe could win in the lottery. And yet they hold out because they feel a million or two a season isn't worth it? Apparently, they are unaware of people accross the world that actually LOSE money from playing hockey (see, bar leagues + pick-up / drop-in hockey).
But it started with the owners and the men who inked the contracts and funded these teams. For some dumb-ass reason they decided that having a great player on their team was worth x-amount of dollars.
But what can that one player (or line) bring them? Well, butts in the seats equates to money on consessions. More butts means more eyes looking at the advertising space along the rink boards, score boards, signage in the bathrooms, etc. Good players equates to more player memorilbilia being sold as a result of them being "awesome" or "cool." Owners now have a chance to make it on TV or to hopefully get some of that money that the NHL got when they signed with ABC or FOX for rights to televise games.
I have to ask, though, when did the owners finally realize that they were losing money? Their bean-counters should have tapped them on the shoulders about 15 years ago and said "Hey, even if we get all this capital from having great players on our team, we'll still be losing money because we pay them too much." The whole reason the NHL is in this mess right now is because the owners were stupid enough to keep raising the bar on salaries on those free agents.
I can only hope the minor league games don't get too expensive to attend..
