Newbies

Jun 02, 2005 12:14 Newbies
I'm reading alot of posts on here saying "You're a newbie, stfu". The issue is that alot of these so called "newbies" have been around a long time. Soooo... if you're around a long time how can you be a "newbie"? At what point do you leave the "newbie" phase and enter the "Suck" phase? Please discuss.

P.S. Just because I said "Suck" doesn't mean there is an invitation for homosexual comments.

If you're not pre-96, you're a newbie for life.

Yeah, he won't have the oppurtunity to insult you.

99, Anyone who acts and plays foolishly is a newb. I don't think you can call someone a newb if they aren't good, I mean, as long as they are putting out an honest effort and not acting like a dumbass and not fucking the game up, then it's all good. However, certain retards think anyone can be called a newb, and call me a newb. They really don't have anything better to say so it's best you just ignore anyone like that. After all, you know whether or not you are a newbie, and if they diss you, PWN EM.

99: about 2 years, if your around for that long, and you still suck, then well .. you can be upgraded from newb to suck ... and by 2 years I mean 2 years of solid IRC'ing .. not 2 years of poking your head in and out of open games on the tracker. If you do that, you can be a newb forever.

No joke. You need to play bolo often and with players of equal or higher calibre in order to move out of 'suck'. Bolo is a labor-intensive game. The more time you put into strict games with the clientele I just mentioned, the more ass you'll inevitably kick.

This amuses me. When have we played a gain together in the last year Min? You should know who you're talking about before you speak.

oh .. you mean I don't know who you are? .... your beastmaster .... I don't generally play with people who arn't logged into irc .... when was the last time you were on irc beastmaster? .... oh ya .... never ....

besides, I wasn't calling you a newbie beastmaster, I was answering the question you asked. You asked at what point does someone change from a newbie into just suck .. well .. I gave you a response, 2 years or so. Perhaps you should learn to read? ....

Min

p.s. The last time I did play you beastmaster ..... you did suck ..... so whats your problem?

3 types of newbs. ediquette, skill, and mid level player..

Ediquette newb = super new to the game, thinks lgm and builder are 2 different aspects of bolo. knows nothing of the language and wonders what the red spikey thing shooting him is. its like dawn of the dead in the bolo world. knows how to shoot and turn thats about it. "I have no ammo? WTF IS WRONG WITH MY SCREEN, HOW DO I PLAY WITH NO BULLETS?"

skill newb = newb that has the extream basics of the game down ex: knows the difference between a strict game and an open one. knows what a call is and that people actually pick teams before a game is called. loves to hardline and keeps his pills in a nice little circle. eger to learn the ways of an experanced vet and hates the label "newb". dies about 20 plus times a strict game.

mid level player: tech. not really a newb. same as skill level but one touch higher. knows when to dbl and when to lay back, has a better grasp on pill takes and placement. better at teamwork. likes opens less and less. basicly has a pretty good stragtegic level.

but theres till one more. my level. FUBARed

FUBARed: really dont givva shit about being called a newb because this is a game and im usualy drunk anyway.

who cares if your a newb or not. sure your going to get yelled at for fuckin up games but as long as u take it well people will respect u. your suposed to have fun at this. not worry about the trival bullshit that comes along with the package.

Fuck em.
Jun 04, 2005 15:10
And besides, I don't play anymore, so suck it min. :o 8)
Jun 04, 2005 20:46
I would have to agree with some of FUBAR's sentiments. I am here strictly to have fun. I do exactly what I enjoy and it shows - I make maps an attempt to inflict havoc in opens. I rarely play stricts and when I do it's because I think the others there are aware of my skill level and don't care or I know they will have fun with it no matter how badly I do. If you look at my player diary that hardly ever happens which is a pretty sad commentary on this community.

In fact, one of the last few stricts I played I got blasted by my so-called team-mate in the IRC and in the game even after I explained several times that I'm not that good. And people wonder why I don't like playing stricts? DUH! (God forbid I ruin his rating - shame on me!) On another occasion I attempted to join a 2x2 but the comment there that got me was, "whoever get's DAllen is going to loose." All I had to say was, "C-ya later d00ds.”

We want this community to grow yet we slam every newb for the tiniest of infractions. Silly, isn't it? You know what else is silly is that we live in a society where tolerance of religions and differing moral standards is rapidly becoming the norm yet there are those in this place that cannot tolerate differing skill levels.

It's just a game...sheez.

Really, that's why I don't play anymore. In other games people slam newbs but the newbs get better and pwn. In this game the learning curve is real steep, so anyone trying to climb that steep curve usually gets pushed back down easily, and it's not any fun. It's a dog eat dog world, maybe some of the so called "vets" need to become vegitarean dogs for a little while. And you wonder why the community is dying here. Really, I can understand beating up on someone being a retard, but beating up on someone minding their own business ain't cool. Some people need a wake up message. Others are awake and trying. Leave them the fuck alone.

Whats funniest to me about your whole rant, is that you proclaimed yourself a hypocrite ... You say that players should be 'tolerant' of other players, and then right afterwards you state how your not tolerant either. Nice.

ya, it is, so why do you care if someone whines about you on irc? ..... you caring about them sniveling is just as bad as the sniveling itself.

Well, you just proved your own ignorance. Thank you for allowing me not to argue.

I think a bunch of people on IRC seem to be under the impression that "their sacred channel" is the end all and be all to be good. Well's, I's a's got's new's for you's= it aint. people can be good with out ever joining your channel. I'm not opposed to it, I just dont see ONE SINGLE advantage.

YAY, i'm now part of a group of buttholes who believe their exclusive. Ladies and gentlemen, I don't have time for the hipe. I want good times taking your pills and shooting your men.

Where did I say that I wasn't tolerant? I believe I said, "yet there are those in this place that cannot tolerate differing skill levels" without naming names or accusing any single individual. In the first part, I did say "we" but that was an attempt to address this as a community - not as individuals. I guess it came out wrong - sorry.

That's an excellent question Min. Why do I care? I'll tell you why - because of the newb that get's slammed for some stupid mistakes and says, "Screw this, I got better things to do than get insulted." and never comes back to Winbolo.

Look Min, I meant in no way to direct any of this at you or any individual at wbn. Judging from your reaction (and I could be wrong), I am guessing you think I am directing this at you personally. That couldn't be further from the truth. I meant for this to just be a post of observations I have had over the year or whatever I have been playing off and on for everyone to see.

Relay Chat has many important advantages. It's the best way to set up games and a proven way to communicate with your allies and enemies before and after games to hammer out strategies and discuss what you/they did right and wrong in the games. Oddly, but perhaps not unexpected is that Relay Chat gives you alot of insight into the personality of a player (through learning of them from other players) and I believe you're able to arm yourself with more info about their personality (which does give clues to their playing style) and so are more able to exploit their weaknesses or what they need as an ally ingame.

Relay Chat, although often used to start flamewars and vent frustration, is still a mighty-useful tool. It helps you learn, it saves time, and it allows you to create games. I hope I haven't insinuated that it is a 'club' or that it has been poisoned by a feeling of exclusivity.

by stating your reaction when veteran players complained about you in games ... intolerance is a 2 way road.

So, tell me, if you don't get 'slammed' (though keep in mind there is various ways of going about doing this, and some of those ways I don't agree with) how will you learn to be a better player? and if a newer player can't handle the ego/attitudes of the veteran players, then they won't be able to handle them when they arn't a newbie either .... you think its only newbies who get slammed? .... some people .... (not naming anyone) slam everyone, irregardless of their status.

Maybe it's the vet's that should get a handle on their ego instead of the other way around. Min, there's a difference between getting blasted or slammed and helping someone get better. This almost sounds like this is a matter of definitions. Let me illustrate how I look at it:

"DAllen, that was not a smart move. You should have done X instead of Y."

I don't see that as a slam because that's helpful. That helps me become a better player.

"DALLEN YOU IDIOT...YOU SUCK"

That's a slam and does absolutely nothing to help me become a better player. I mean if you just got pwned within 2 minutes then I think I can surmise that was not a good game and I ain't got the skills  . I guess in my world (which is a very strange place) I was hoping maybe I could change some attitudes so hopefully this community could grow a bit more. But you're right, there are some who will degrade people no matter what so I guess some things will never change.

And I guess you were right that I was a little hypicritical with being intollerant of people insulting me in the irc. I didn't appreciate the insults, the yelling and the degrading remarks. Maybe I'm delusional but I'm still here putting up with it (though it doesn't happen much since I avoid stricts) because I honestly believe that I might be able to make a positive contribution in this community. Maybe I'm not doing very well at it but I am trying.

A vet in winbolo? The very idea is laughable.
