"New Map" Tournament

Sep 03, 2005 01:21 "New Map" Tournament
I've had this idea in the back of my mind for quite some time.

Background:

I think it's really cool that people are still making maps to this day, but despite that we keep using the old ones. And I understand that. CT3, Fitzhu, Baringi, ALL those classics have generally proved to make a smooth and balanced game. New maps haven't. Doesn't mean that they are necessarily bad, it just means that people around here like to play it safe. (Naturally there's all other kinds of reasons as to why people only play the classics but for the sake of keeping this short I'll hold back on those.)

What I'm getting to is this: there should be some kind of way to encourage people to use new maps, and to keep using them. I remember back when “smallball” used to be popular. Where the hell did that go? Granted, there were people who'd rather use their dick as a bungee cord than play on that map but it definitely had something going for a bit.

The Solution:

Creating a tournament for "new maps" seems a good way to go about it, but I'm not sure if I could run one decently enough or if anyone else with enough organizational skills would be interested in running it. There's also the fact that tournaments in general usually have a fairly low turnout around here, and making it "new maps only" might even cut that number down further.

Disclaimer:

Just to clarify, I'm not arguing that new maps “expand your strategy,” or that an “expanded strategical mind” is important. We're here to have fun, and if the general population likes to be able to hammer out those same strategies in a second's worth of notice then that's fine. No one's getting graded here on how many different maps they play, but I think it's just a shame to have so much work wasted just because people don't feel like trying something new. I also hate the fact that there are all these unexplored possibilities in WinBolo that just might make the game more interesting. Maybe not everyone's mind works with conventional strategy well, maybe they'd really enjoy the game if there were more options.

My tournament idea isn’t really something I’m putting forth for any purpose other than to provide examples of what I’m looking for. If you’d like to see some new maps played, then shoot, or post your thoughts on a tournament or whatever.

For whatever reason, I love making maps, but actually going in and getting a feel for the game is like pulling teeth. Getting advice and ideas from players would be nice, and they can't really give me (or other mappers) advice if they don't play 'em.

In case this was really garbled: All I’m after is an increase in interest in new maps. If you think you have a way of doing that, then by all means, post it.

Nova, well said.

Here are my suggestions:

I'm too lazy too, but I would appreciate it if somebody would make a list of new maps which are playable and likely to be played(perhaps you could do this Nova?). Lets face it, alot of the new maps that come out are made merely too look nice, but there are a good deal of nice playable ones. I think if somebody would be willing to take the time for this it could be great, and could contribute to the use of new maps.

Another thing. Many of the bot owners don't update their bots frequently(with the exception of Ren). I think this could be changed if people could creat .zip files of all the new maps on the map links thread to aid in the ease of updating archives.

Honestly, I am FAR too lazy to do these things listed above, but if somebody could... I would be happy to play on the maps!
Sep 03, 2005 02:07 LINKS TO MAPS
I'll add in links to maps that I think would make the cut in this post.

Note: I'll be making all the maps that I eventually decide on into a zip file eventually.

The Northernmost, Southernmost, Easternmost and Westernmost parts of this map are exactly as far from each other as Fitzhu.

Before I forget: "new" does not necessarily mean "created after such and such a date". These can also be maps that have been overlooked in general, no matter how old they are. So if you see something even in the Classic Map collection that's nice and funky go ahead and post it or e-mail it to me.

I'd prefer getting it in the e-mail, that way the list will be in just one place and we won't get a bunch of excess posts. My e-mail is sklent_rehroh@yahoo.com

I think we should also include Q's "Romp Toy" collection.

(DAllen) 7 sides simple

This map was what I would consider probably my only success of the 7 sided series of maps. This thing plays so weird I think it fits into what Nova is describing. I've tried a number of times with other people.

(Nova) I Swear I Didn't Do it!

Now this is an original concept. Deep water in the middle of an asymetrical playing area. I am not sure if the file size would be too big to host online but if not, this would be nice to get in the rotation.

Well, a lot of my earlier maps are nothin but chew toy variations, however, proobably my fav/best maps are:

The Romp toys (3)
Well rounded, highly playable for all game styles.

http://winbolo.net/mapcollectioninfo.php?id=4623
Q Vulture toy
Very fun little chaotic map!

http://winbolo.net/mapcollectioninfo.php?id=3753
Q FFA8
I recall this being quite popular among the bigger players when I demoed it to them! It believe it also got second place in the map contest ud had! w00t!

http://winbolo.net/mapcollectioninfo.php?id=4081
Q FFA8 2
The sequel to FFA8! Looks like it'd be great!

http://winbolo.net/mapcollectioninfo.php?id=4725
Q Small toy DH Oil Rig
Fast paced crazy mini-map!

These are some open maps that I thought were really cool: (Note: If Nova is just picking tourney maps, then don't look at these! The ones I would like to see are up above! I just felt like showcasing my other favs because they ARE GOOD TOO! :D )

http://winbolo.net/mapcollectioninfo.php?id=4520
Q Dock Islands
Uberleet awesome open gameplay! My fav!

http://winbolo.net/mapcollectioninfo.php?id=4728
Q Termites vs Ants
Another team battle fav! Crazy fun!

Other misc maps:

http://winbolo.net/mapcollectioninfo.php?id=3545
Q Boxing Ring
z0mg! People loved this boxing (walling) map when I played it with them! Great alternative fun!

http://winbolo.net/mapcollectioninfo.php?id=4567
Q Newbie-Catcher 6000
HAHAHA, I love this thing. Not for a real game, but hilarious newbie catchin fun! teehee

http://winbolo.net/mapcollectioninfo.php?id=4289
Q Chew toy 3
And finally, THIS! This thing is hilarious! trick people that do nothing but play Ct3! Serves em right. ;) I meant to do this on April fool's, but I forgot, so next year I'm doin it for sure! I plan to make it a winbolo tradition! Hilarious. (Shh, don't tell anyone, if they're not interested in my maps it's their fault :D )

That's all, you guys did it! You made me pick! XD Those are the ones I like best, I have made MANY chew toy variations and other maps, but there are just too damn many to pick out the ones that I liked best (and didn't suck). Enjoi!~

Personally, I think we oughta be including more tarmac maps here. This is what people like to play nowadays, and we need to satisy that. Some of the mentioned maps I liked(I'm only thinking bout tourney maps): Q's Romp Toys, Q vulture toy, Q small toy DH Oil Rig, Q FFA8/QFFA8 2, those are the ones I liked from Q's collection. I liked (DAllen) 7 sides simple, but "(Nova) I Swear I Didn't Do it!" just aint too playable as a tourney. I also like most of Nova's suggestions. Personally, I think we might wanna remove the names from the maps purely for convienience reasons. That's all I have to say. Anyway, If somebody disagrees with me please dont come out with a bitchfest because I'm hoping we can keep this thread devoid of crap.
Sep 03, 2005 19:21
I'm not looking for "just" tourny maps, what I'm after is new maps getting played more. The tournament idea was just something I threw out there.

HAH... my art might not be the roxiest, but I claim to have the best "misc" maps! :D

SO THERE, IN YOUR FACE!

*Pause* ...what? No one likes teh uber newbeh catcher? NO3S! >.<

Seriously catch some newbs ppl it's fun.
Sep 03, 2005 21:41
But hang on there for a sec, we need to decide how exactly we're going to go about this before you start talking about misc maps and all that. This is all strictly in the preliminary stages, nothing is definite yet. That being said, I'd like to see more discussion on the possibilities of tournaments (or whatever you think will get people interested more).

Also: If you like a map you see in the list, rate it. This will help me to weed out the good from the bad when I finally compile the zip file.
Sep 03, 2005 21:50
Yeah, if you rate me, I'll rate you! Most of them are rated by Acro and Nova, but I stopped making maps before DAllen and Alain came on the scene.

Btw, what other players make good maps? Wasn't there some guy named Omega or something? And y be normal? I think they made good maps? Names ppl?
Sep 04, 2005 08:50
Ok, Q :) I will look at your maps and rate some of them !

One idea is designate one of the bots to have all of the maps in the zip file and let them cycle through the auto-spawn for a fews days/weeks. That means taking out the regular maplist on the bot and replacing it with these maps. This way, people can get a good feel for how each will play under opens. This will also enable people in IRC to setup strict's on the new maps. Then once people have played them a number of times they can go to the map page and rate it in a special "tournament" account. Highest rating wins. Now, one problem I have with this idea is that I have NO idea how easy/hard it is to switch out map lists on a bot. So who's willing to have their bot limited to 10-15 maps for a few days?

I don't imagine it being terribly hard, but having a "winner" selected at the end seems a bit gratuitious. I could conceivably make a "Novabot" now that I've got DSL, only problem is, I'm not sure if my upload speeds would be enough.

edit: I looked and found out that my upload is around 128-384 kpbs. Would that work for hosting games?
Sep 05, 2005 18:13
Ren's been kind enough to make me a Novabot, which seems to be fully functional except for the fact that my firewall is being goofy. If anyone in IRC can give me a hand with this it'd be much appreciated.
Sep 13, 2005 14:04
If people can agree on a list of "new" maps, I'll be happy to create a server to cycle through just those maps.

It would help me if someone downloaded and zipped up a folder containing all the .map files and emailed it to me. Also, a text file listing the map filenames would be helpful as well.
Sep 14, 2005 00:06
Depending on how things roll, Fermat, I'll probably have a fair-sized list of maps to you by the end of this weekend by latest.

Q Tic-Toc Tactix

This map is very cool, partly damaged pills make for an awesome fast-paced crazy game.

http://winbolo.net/mapcollectioninfo.php?id=5862

Q Chaoz Attack

One of other few maps I made similiar in style to Acroan And Nova maps. It roxorz.
Sep 30, 2005 02:42
Nova, any progress on that list? We can start small with like a dozen "new" maps and perhaps add more later (or have additional "new" sets).
Sep 30, 2005 04:03
Major brainfart over here in California, Fermat, sorry... I did get some maps picked out, though, and I'll come back later and shoot 'em out here.

I have already downloaded them and created the spawner. In the future, it is most useful to have the .map files zipped up and emailed to me, along with a text list of the filenames. Thanks!
