"New Map" Tournament
I've had this idea in the back of my mind for quite some time.
Background:
I think it's really cool that people are still making maps to this day, but despite that we keep using the old ones. And I understand that. CT3, Fitzhu, Baringi, ALL those classics have generally proved to make a smooth and balanced game. New maps haven't. Doesn't mean that they are necessarily bad, it just means that people around here like to play it safe. (Naturally there's all other kinds of reasons as to why people only play the classics but for the sake of keeping this short I'll hold back on those.)
What I'm getting to is this: there should be some kind of way to encourage people to use new maps, and to keep using them. I remember back when “smallball” used to be popular. Where the hell did that go? Granted, there were people who'd rather use their dick as a bungee cord than play on that map but it definitely had something going for a bit.
The Solution:
Creating a tournament for "new maps" seems a good way to go about it, but I'm not sure if I could run one decently enough or if anyone else with enough organizational skills would be interested in running it. There's also the fact that tournaments in general usually have a fairly low turnout around here, and making it "new maps only" might even cut that number down further.
Disclaimer:
Just to clarify, I'm not arguing that new maps “expand your strategy,” or that an “expanded strategical mind” is important. We're here to have fun, and if the general population likes to be able to hammer out those same strategies in a second's worth of notice then that's fine. No one's getting graded here on how many different maps they play, but I think it's just a shame to have so much work wasted just because people don't feel like trying something new. I also hate the fact that there are all these unexplored possibilities in WinBolo that just might make the game more interesting. Maybe not everyone's mind works with conventional strategy well, maybe they'd really enjoy the game if there were more options.
My tournament idea isn’t really something I’m putting forth for any purpose other than to provide examples of what I’m looking for. If you’d like to see some new maps played, then shoot, or post your thoughts on a tournament or whatever.
For whatever reason, I love making maps, but actually going in and getting a feel for the game is like pulling teeth. Getting advice and ideas from players would be nice, and they can't really give me (or other mappers) advice if they don't play 'em.
In case this was really garbled: All I’m after is an increase in interest in new maps. If you think you have a way of doing that, then by all means, post it.
