IRC Policy

Mar 22, 2006 02:53 IRC Policy
Here are the current users rules for the IRC channel #winbolo and the IRC server irc.winbolo.us and irc.winbolo.com.

What is your feedback on the rules?

Please keep in mind two things.

1) These are ONLY the rules in which ops in #winbolo and operators can enforce by kicking/banning an individuals. They way they can enforce these rules are covered in another document - the ops policy.

2) These do NOT cover generally ethical rules regarding the game of winbolo and the rules of being a nice person. It's currently out of the scope of this page to over these ethical rules of good sportmanship. Furthermore, rules of good sportmanship is really enforced by the players themselves.

Here goes:

=========================================
Things that can get you banned/kicked from #winbolo and/or the IRC server:

* Flooding, by repeating the same line over and over, or pasting a bunch of lines to purposely cause a disruption (in example: pasting 20+ lines of text for reference when it doesn't interrupt a conversation is fine, but pasting 15 lines of text when other people are having a conversation not related to the text is NOT fine.) Operators are given some discretion to administer warnings, kicks & bans for 'gray area' flooding activity.

* Ruining games started on a bot connected to .us, which consists of the following:
1. If you did not start the game (cause it be created by the server), then wait until teams are organized and everyone is ready before actually playing. Please be Patient. (Password-ed games only)

2. If someone asks you to leave (and you did not create the map), then leave without a fuss. Many times people organize games with set players, and then start a map to play that game. The person who started the map via the gamebot on IRC gets the final decision in how big the game is and who has to leave or can stay. (Password-ed games only)

3. NO HACKS ALLOWED (any game type)

4. Do not kill (shut down) a game in which other people are still playing. (Any game type)

* Rules concerning IRC commands and the game bots:

1. Do not start an excessive amount of maps in which you do not intend to play.

2. Do not repeatedly trigger a bots trademark response (Scripts such as, nycbot’s bah or renbot’s idiot script). (more then 3 times in 30 seconds is too much)

* Using a script that causes excessive repeating of stuff. The "Bah" for sheepbot is reasonable, the "gg" script isn't.

* Nick change flood. Excessive nick changes to purposefully flood the channel. (Nick changing though, even if a lot and it doesn't flood the channel is ok)

* Ban Walking

well, while i'm sure mine won't be as thoughtful and insightful as the previous two responses, i'll give this a go:

i think there should be a rule against joining a passworded strict in progress and starting in without asking and receiving confirmation from at least 1 player in the game already. reason: it's not enough that people leave when asked to - by the time someone asks, an intruder might already have killed lgms, taken bases or pills, or otherwise interfered with the game significantly. just a thought.

also, i think the 'do not kill games .... etc...' part of the policy should be clarified. some people think they can kill any game they mapped at any time. some people think a 'game in progress' means any game with 1 or more players. i'm not weighing in with a personal opinion on what this all SHOULD mean, just saying that the wording could be clearer. i was once very perplexed when someone killed a game i mapped, and i was subsequently banned for killing a game that person mapped, because there was some ambiguity about these details.

just two cents from the non-racist, non-homophobic portion of our community ...

Mar 22, 2006 16:58 no warning for me
I'm guessing I was banned because of Game Bot Rule #2:
Do not repeatedly trigger a bots ...

We invented a game where someone picks a number and the first person to get bah to say that number wins. Until now, I didn't read the IRC policy, but I assume that is the reason. Does triggering bot scripts cause a problem? If so, I was unaware about it. It seemed harmless enough and it wasn't interfering with anyone's conversation.

Also, regarding your policy, you need to have a unique number for each section so that someone can refer to it specifically.

It might not have been interfering with anyone's conversation, but there's two more things that I take into account here (whoever banned you probably agrees):

a) Once you got the "bah" game going, if someone needed to talk about something in the channel, it would probably be difficult to stop the game. In essence, keep the road clear for future conversations.

b) It sets a bad precedent.

You can also appeal bans, ...I think I'm just gonna call you Par for short. Intent factors in bigtime when we make a decision. If you give the op who banned you a quick PM and talk it over, and the op believes you meant no harm, more than likely you'll be unbanned.

As for the policy, I'd like to see the part about ops not being able to remove another op's ban amended to "Ops cannot remove another op's ban without said op's express permission." One time I couldn't un-ban someone I'd banned for some reason, but jhood took the initiative and unbanned him for me. There is a clause about "dire circumstances," but "dire" makes me think of tornadoes and hellfire.

ZZZ, LRL posted the reasons you were banned on the .us forum. Here is the thread:

http://www.winbolo.us/forums/viewtopic.php?t=167

All bans and kicks are logged on that forum.

He never spoke to me about this. He never even tried to stop me. I left the room and then he banned me 1.5 hours later. Seriously LRL, if you're going to say you warned someone about it, then you should have proof of that, not just some vague memory.

[19:24:47] <LRLd> zzz banned for flooding, duration 2 days

Also, he never banned zet. Zet said he wasn't banned because he never had been banned before. However, I also have never been banned before. So then why was I banned and zet not banned? Good job on consistency LRL. AND NO YOU NEVER SPOKE TO ME ABOUT THIS BEFORE, AND IF YOU SAY YOU DID THEN SHOW THE PROOF!
