We shouldn't be recruiting new players. It seems that new players bring only more complaining from certain "veteran" players in IRC. I think that by closing the gates to IRC, and keeping it "veterans" only, along with banning any new player from all games (we'll throw them in the opens and ban them when we feel like playing one of those since stricts are so much work) we'll be able to converse freely and joyously in IRC and bring WinBolo back to how it was a few years ago.

OR..

The people who found the game first could remove the sticks from their asses and either move on from this game or deal with the fact that a new player does not in fact share their same knowledge of the game, as in fact they are NEW. Bah!

everyone bitches at noobs, its a right of passage. it depends on if the noob knows hes a noob. and im talkin noob in a sence of does not know the difference between how a strict or an open are played, different froms of ediquette. they just dont know. i got yelled at a lot, and for that matter i still do. everyone takes a beating when they are new thats just how shit is. it all depends on how the new guy takes it.

i think irc should be open to eveyone. but, i think people sholdnt have to go through the gauntlet to kick someone, or for that matter ban someone. but i think it should be done on like, a 3 strike basis. fuck up once, one day ban. 2 times one week ban 3rd time on month. any time after that FOREVER. of corse this is just my view on it.

i guess my only point to send all noobs to irc is, u can really talk to him or her. not just across the news wire where its most times its to much of a bitch to try to explane anything in any sort of detail. send them to irc and u can take the time it needs to explane what needs to be done.

It was sarcasm, if you didn't know. My frustration is targeted more toward those players who believe for whatever reason that they should command greater respect merely on the grounds that they started playing before others. And then there are those who take it a step further than this and literally believe they're superior because they've grapsed the game quicker. I can only express my sympathy for those who have to deal face-to-face with these people offline.

Alot of people bitch at newer players, yes, but not everyone. Elvis doesn't. LRL, Sheeps, Fermat, Kat and IanBanks never have, as far as I know. Lots of users either ignore or offer advice rather than taking their anger or frustrations out on someone for any reason, not just because what we're talking about. I think it's called "maturity", but I dunno.

Everyone's welcome in irc, except for DZ and nas. DZ broke the three strikes method you proposed, and nas decided that him and a friend should kick our community offline for a while. Since I came back in Novemeber, I haven't saw anyone removed from the main channel for anything other than breaking the rules that LRL listed on his site. I think all of this sort of goes with what you're saying, although I can't honestly say that after all that I remember what this topic was started for.

Sounds like noob talk to me.

Remember, if you're not pre-96, you're a newbie for life.

yes, i have to say i missed the sarcasm. i do tend to get alittle pissed too, but usally when someones yelling at u, your probably doing something wrong, or at least in there eyes u are. if u care enough to find out u will say "what?" or "what tha eff are u yelling about", or "im new". my first bolo ass ream was from DZ actually. telling me "wtf are u doing asshole dont go." now, at this point i may choose to say "stfu" and return his hostility, or i can say, "im new man, what tha hell are u yelling at? what am i doing wrong?", which is what i said. he then told me the difference between stricts and opens and how each one is started. and he said it in a non hostile way. if your given hostility and u return hostility its just going to get worse. and i think thats what happens most the time in the game, but, if im new in irc and ask these type questions i am treated with an amount of respect, open arms so to speak. but all and all because im just all over the place here, it depends on how the noob handels it. even the most mad bolo player will probably calm down when "u" the noob admits to fault and asks wtf is up as so not to mess up another game.

IRC RULES J-HOOD DROOLS.

if you're not pre-96, you're a newbie for life

Recently I talked to the guy who showed me Bolo and I found out I online played for a while in 1995. Until now I didn't know that was online and thought it was just local Appletalk. Mind you, neither remembered our old handles. He remembers FireIce, the poor guy.

Fubar: yes, it was sarcasm. I'd rather have IRC full of new players then the old "veteran" players who truely believe they own the damn channel. However, it brings me humor to know that their lives are so meaningless that they have to resort to pulling rank in IRC or the game. :)

I've heard where dz has helped players, and I've read first hand where he states he's going to literally kill them. Next subject, please.

I agree with you on your last statement, but again I think there are in fact those that won't return hostility when projected to it. A rare breed, perhaps, but they're there.

and of corse there are people like that out there, your one of them. i just wish before even trying to play bolo, new players eather

A: read the net ediquette about the game, and the rules.
or
B: joined irc first.

it would be so much easier.

how about opens are just not allowed so everyone is forced to play stricts which would allow everyone to get better and then after a while... theyw ould be allowed to play opens again....

why would anyone want to play stricts when you only get bitched at if you make a mistake by one of the 'veterans'

Dang, who woulda thought the not_so_cool_fool, would be branded a newbie for LIFE!

On a more serious note.

New players are just that, I tend to reframe from calling them newbie(s) because imo it's disrespectful.

Typical newbie attitude.

/n[y]oo'bee/ (Originally from British public-school and military slang variant of "new boy") An inexperienced user of {Usenet} or other system. This term surfaced in the {newsgroup} {news:talk.bizarre} but is now in wide use. Criteria for being considered a newbie vary wildly; a person can be called a newbie in one newsgroup while remaining a respected regular in another. The label "newbie" is sometimes applied as a serious insult to a person who has been around {Usenet} for a long time but who carefully hides all evidence of having a clue. See {BIFF}. [{Jargon File}] (1998-02-18)

newbie is only a insult when refering to someone who's been around for a long time. yet continues to act like they don't know anything.
