Question About Brains?

Nov 30, 2006 20:43 Question About Brains?
I currently play with no brains, I just play straight up with my key board and mouse. My question is do the better players on winbolo.net use brains? If so, what are some of the pro's and con's of using brains and could someone suggest a decent brain pack to use? I'm not a noob to the game but im tired of my team mates getting mad at me and im sure its cus they use brains and I don't, but that can be a easy fix if someone has any suggestions :)

The good players typically don't use brains. No current brains will do anything but hinder your development. Don't bother using them, just learn to play.

I second Min's opinion. Using borgs (brains are the correct term for tanks that drive, shoot, and do everything themselves) really won't help you in any way. They might be cool to look at, and one or two might provide for auto-LGM killing but good players are able to perform just as well.

This already shows you have the right attitude, and I'm sure I would never get angry at you if you were my partner. The more mature players tend not to get so angry; we all realize we've been there, done that... Actually, I still do that from time to time.

Agreed: Do not use brains. To keep a fair footing, I generally disable brains on my server.

I personally use a borg to record what people have said in game. The common misconception is that brains can give you some sort of 'advantage' When in reality they just get in your way. I don't play in games that don't allow brains becuase thats how I record the games I've played. disabling brains doesn't really accomplish much, becuase they are just a disadvantage anyways.

Well, I do enable logging at all times. :) So you can not only see what people have said, but replay the entire game as well.

Also, if a borg allowed someone to see what has been said in the game they are currently in, this could give them an advantage over others who can only see the newswire. A part of the game (albeit an annoying one) is that we can only see what appears there, and if some were limited to that view and not others, it wouldn't be fair.

Edit: In truth, it is precisely for the reason above that I have disabled brains on my server.

so, you have fear that people will recieve messages too quickly? .... ok, well hate to be the bearer of bad news, but some of the better teams actually use other software to communicate rather than winbolo. Such as ventrilo or skype to talk to their allies on their headsets. The kind of advantage this type of thing gives is pretty minor I've found (having used the borg I'm refering to for like .. 3 years since i coded it) Since most times, pillview relays information far quicker than your ally could anyways. I'm constantly pillviewing. And can easily tell when my ally has died and dropped or needs help without them telling me.

If Min made his logging borg more freely available, then maybe it would be less unfair to others. If it is available, please post a link.

Minborg has been availible since I made it.
http://www.winbolo.us/file-download.asp?file=Minborg1_2
is currently the best place to get it. Previously it was availible via my website. After my website went down, I gave it to lrl to host on .us

I find it's a bummer when brains are disabled on servers that typically run an open game spawner. I mean, c'mon, it's an open game: noobs are almost just as useful as vets in these types of situations so I don't think a borg/brain will help much.

The reason I gripe is that open games can be fun to test brains in. Just to see how they perform. Sure, I could load up a single-player game, but you then have to build a map to test certain situations. Like what about an LGM sniping bot? It'd be a pain in the ass to set up a server every time to test or I could just join an open and hope someone sends an LGM near my tank.
