hrmm - well, that's not exactly how it works. in open games, teams are variable and often uneven, but they are what they are. i recommend joining opens and trying to ask 'who needs help' then allying that team.
in strict games teams are made based on the relative skill level of the players involved. the best way to be helpful in making teams is to know which other strict-playing players you are better or worse than - that gives people a chance to gauge your abilities and make teams faster, which is better for everyone. in your case - right now, until you have played more 1v1s to know your level - i would just tell folks 'i am an old player but quite rusty still, but will try hard!'
