I heird about the original version back in the mid 90's. Stopped around '98.

Then around 2003 I heird about the port over to Windows and played opens for a while until I heird about the IRC server(s). I heird from FireIce that the best way to get better was to concentrate on winning 1x1's against players better than yourselfm so I played sheeps, Pawn, LRL and Fermat until I was good enough to take my first pill without losing an LGM.

Then I digressed.

From a coworker (Scully) -- back in 1994 (Bolo, actually).

Scully, Luci4, Beavis - John & Craig (sorry forgot your player names) -- where are you guys???? Join up!!

I remembered the talk back then about a Windows version in the works but it wasn't until Jan 2006 that I thought to Google it to see.

Yeah, I thought jhood was smarter than that. Huh. *shrug*

As for myself, Bolo was more of a miracle. I'd been walking down the side of the road and I saw a piece of black plastic. Realizing it was a floppy disk, I picked it up because I know people always have big rewards for returning their floppies to them. It was marked "free porn," but there was no return address or number anywhere. Thinking it might be somewhere inside the contents of the disk, I took it home and put it into my computer. Inside were three files. One never opened correctly and I'll always wonder what it was because my computer died a few days later. The other one was a simple text document that said something like "Haha, you sucker," but it made no sense because not only am I not a sucker, I do not keep company with such things nor do I have any in my possession. The third file, of course, was a copy of Mac Bolo, which then shaped my destiny for eons to come.

I first played this game in middle school computer class. The teacher had installed it on the computers in the lab, and would allow us to play it on fridays, and if we finished our work early.

Me and my friends would destroy the other players, and I thought I was pretty good.

A while ago, I was nostalgic for it, and was hoping to find the game as a download playable on PC, just so I could single player it and relive it a little.

But I was super lucky and found this site!

And not so lucky in finding out I actually suck at this game. But its fun to work on kill count.

A kid in my class told me about it. He said in 6th grade the whole class used to play in the computer lab. But that was before I went to this school.

Bolo was installed on all the Macs in an Intro to Programming class (Scheme) I took in 9th grade back in 1999. I almost failed it because we were all playing Bolo together during the class. I was obsessed with it and I found WinBolo at home one day while googling it.

heh, at least school has been good for one thing.

Haha, holy shit, Scheme. I hated that language in my Prog Langs classes.

I think Nova - if his story checks out - wins this thread. Finding a floppy on the side of the road with the setup on it? Almost.. clandestine.

Me finding WinBolo is a similar story to how a lot of people found Bolo. In my 11th grade English class, the teach had installed Bolo on about three Macs. I played it maybe once while I went to school and thus was my only exposure to the game and it was quickly forgotten.

But my friends in HS had also played it earlier in middle school and always raved about it. In 12th grade I ended up googling bolo and finding WinBolo. I learned quickly and started running into the likes of DarkOmeN, Min, Rocket, NiteCrawler, SuicideJockey in opens/tournaments on a regular basis who would usually ally up since we knew we could be trusted. JM originally brought me into IRC where I became a lame script0r. Also had some good times in my parents basement back 5 years ago, including an all-nighter playing against UD and drad.

my Brother and I started playing in on our old mac *good old days* I think a friend of my father told us about it and so after some time we got a PC and we started playing winbolo..
