I have ppl constanly saying I cant use mines in a strict game. Mines are in the game to be used if you dont want them used then disable them because I am going to do whatever the fuck i want in a strict a game.
Or people will just stop playing stricts with you.
its not a rule man, its a guidline. its just tacky. if u resort to mineing all your doing is drawing out the game. its like if u were a huge fat man runnin around on the beach with a speedo. sure, theres no rules against it, but u dont wanna see that shit. most players feel its "bad ediquette" to mine in stricts. another example, like talkin shit to a guy, then when he gets in your face, u say sorry, but right when he turns around u hit him over the head with a bottle. its a cheap move. just petty. i think its the same for deforesting, sure, u can go shoot all the trees out so the other guy cant build, but its a cheap way to win. mineing is a very easy and effective way to win. been there, done that. try to win more strategicly, not whats more easy. ive seen lots of times where the mines work against the player that did it.
I challenge any of you guys to a strict 1x1 on a normal tournament level map and I will allow you to deforest and mine to your hearts content. I will not mine unless you are right next to me, and I will not purposefully deforest. If deforesting and mining are cheap and it is 'very easy and effective way to win' by employing those tactics, the odds should be stacked in your favor, no?
the truth is mining and deforesting are not cheap, and in most games it is counter productive to waste resources doing it. in the rare situation that is isn't counter productive, the game is at a stall already and it is the only logical conclusion. even if you do not actively mine or deforest, the game will naturally develop into a tree resource battle.
i will concede that in a handicap game (a game involving one team having fewer players than another team) the team with more players mining and deforesting is 'cheap'. however, my stance is unless it is commonly agreed upon before the game, it is legit, though in the case of a handicap, it is poor form.
UD's got a point, the only flaw i see in the is carpet mineing in a strict game... I can under sand useing few mines to kill or slow a player down but for instance invadeing a base and laying mines constantly But other than that i 110% agree with every thing underdog said
If I'm in a 1v1 and my opponent strip mines large areas and pulls back his pills and just sits back there, I will quit. I play to have fun, and at that point it just gets boring. If you use a few mines here and there that's fine.
I think UD pretty much has it covered. Another reason I typically mine is to slow down faster pillwarriors than myself. And to give my pills more time to kill them when they try to sweep my pills. I've never been that fast of a pillwarrior, and mines can be used as additional protection against a faster player. If you plant a minimal pilline, do a row of mines/craters in front of that row. You don't need as many pills to defend that area. Using things like that you can direct your opponent around the map to places you want him to attack. Mines are a twoedged sword however, because if later you need to pass quickly past the area you mined. Its going to be a pain.
Anyone who quits just becuase someone mines a bit in a game is pretty lame in my opinion. And I usually use mines against those players more than I would against someone who doesn't care. Bolo is a mind game, if you piss off your enemy by doing things they don't like seeing (mining/killing tree's) then they will start to lose their cool, and make more mistakes. Whoever makes the most mistakes loses. Most of the time in bolo your time is better spent taking bases/land/resources than mining.

yes, but its different in team games. in a 3x3 if i concentrate on just killin trees and mine your ass while my team mates hold u. your done. if i have a strong ally in a 2x2 it would work as well. i think it also matters the size of map. if i deforest and mine chew, its a lot more costly for u, but on a bigger map its more costly to me, that being a waste of my time. u all have good points. but i mostly mean team games because i dont really do the 1x1 thing.
ok, so i cant realy play but when someone starts setting up an open games bace on chew i quit. Its not what chew is about. What makes strict and chew fun is flanking and counter attacks and chasing baces. If you like to make forts and put 5 lines of mines around your bace then play open or atleast dont play with me. :cry:
Early today i was playing an open game, yes it was an open game and addbot decideshe was gonna flood the map, driving around laying mines every were Me n wuff which was the only play againest me having all but 7 pills were in the middle of a pill war and here comes addybot to ruin the fun, mineing the shit out of my base only consistanly coming i asked him to stop and the mines contineued: addy i see where ur comming from that its an open game but get real comon ur a VET u better than that

Lucky, you've embarked on a point,... I am a vet, and with my experience perhaps you should think a lil more deeper then that, after all I know who LooLoo is too, and I wasnt doing what he/she does I wasnt floodign the map, but I WAS mining between your bases and your pills
Why do you think I did that,.... well you gave yourself a hint to one reason, it slowed youdown and I had no pills, in order for me in an "open" game to have a good shot of swiping one of your pills is to slow down your recovery, and to slow down your protection. youve done this to me several times, infact you do even worse if you enter a game others are having a blast, and you think its over or no fun for you you simply state "kill it", as if each game revolves around what Lucky wants and whether "he" is the only one having fun.
Secondly I mined you cuz I noticed it got to you, if I can get in your head and fluster you or keep you detoured from your work to type complaining msgs, then I now have yet another way of swiping pills and getting in on the game,
And for the record, I gave you the "its an open" comment becuase you used that comment on me when it was 11x 1 (the 1 being myself) in an open and when I asked why you said: " who cares its an open go cry about it"

Ignoring all the other analyzing we could have done on that game, I'll just comment on masamune's mining. It was a well-done tactical maneuver.
Notice where he drops his line at: it completely dissects the NE quad and -- when detonated -- prevents quick movement from one side to the other. This is relevant as the red team still has all bases in the NE quad, one pill on the north side and at least 3 on the south side. This turns things into a two-front war. One of the dangerous things out there when trying to conquer the last quad is to over-extend and under-estimate the time advantage that the one quad team has. They can get from both fronts a lot quicker than you can drive from 3 o'clock to 12 o'clock. There are exceptions, but both teams here pretty much ignored center.
But why would you complain? Just tarmac that shit up. Watch earlier in the video when the teams start to focus on EC (east center). Players are planting pills having their LGMs run over craters and rubble. Count how many times Hellraiser drives over the craters. Watch Dr. Bolo avoid the big clump just south of the base.
Hellraiser then decides to do the same thing and mines SE, but not as affectively. In that situation, he would have wanted to place mines right between the green team's line and their closest bases. This slows down them getting resources and might fuck up things like rebuilding and sweeping, as they can't draw their LGM around due to limited surface area.
Was the game already over when masamune dropped that first line of mines? I almost thought so. If it wasn't, it certaintly swung things in favor of the green team and possibly, actually sped up the end of the game compared to drawing it out!
For those players that complain that mines aren't to be used in stricts (gameboy/boro/foxx), they only state that because they aren't sure how to overcome mining or realize it slows the game down. Yes, it's usually (but not all the time) a last-ditch effort. For instance, if you're clearly losing a quad, fuck it up, pull out, completely switch focus to another area, and push your opponent into that cratered quad.
It would be interesting to see other vets comment on the mines issue (lance, sev, hellraiser, jky). I say go ahead and mine all you want but as UD pointed it, there are tradeoffs involved in it.
