Forum Icons

I've always thought it would be kind of cool to have little 8x8 or 16x16 pixel icons or avatars underneath our nicks to denote some of the things we've accomplished. To show you what I mean, take a look over at the Broadband Reports forums at the little icons on the left hand side of a post, below the user's information. They denote things like the clubs a user belongs to (such as SETI@home, Folding@home, and others).

This would be a nice little way to spruce up the forums. Icons denoting someone who has paid their shareware fee, someone who has donated to WBN, different levels or colors for number of tanks killed, bases taken, pills taken, games played, wins, and that sort of thing.

The downside is that bandwidth costs would go up. Lots of little images loading on every threadview can add up quickly. And some users might be ashamed that they haven't paid the shareware fee or contributed to WBN yet.

That doesn't seem like a downside to me.
