Is there anyone still developing Winbolo? I heard a story about the source code getting lost in a fire or something...

Anyway - given how difficult it is to start a strict (making teams, starting positions, random "Me" named players coming in and grabbing bases before the start, etc.) it is clear to me that this is what killed bolo (aside from 1st person shooters...).

I can't be the first one to ever think of this - but what if in stricts there was a start-up screen where the first person in controls alliances and starting positions - can kick unwanted people out and lock the game... Then when everything is set - hit go and you're live...

The source code is watched over by Desmo in the secure Bolo Cabal.

Also Fermat was creating a 'launcher' that did all that, but the idea seems dead because he hasn't played since December of last year. IIRC there is a in-game timer you can set when spawning the game that prevents anyone from starting before the time is up. That should stop jump starts if it's set long enough to get enough players who don't get bored easy.

JM (Elvis) still comes around once in awhile and, I'm sure, still works on WinBolo in his spare time.

Something what you're talking about was proposed by people years ago. Make WinBolo a sort of RTS game in regards to starting the game. Having an in-game chat room would probably keep more people around as you could put faces (or voices, whatever) to the players and also control the unruly ones a lot easier.

You'll know when WinBolo (and Bolo) are dead when no one brings up the topic of the game dying anymore. Why? Because there aren't enough people to have the discussion with!
