Actually I can play comfortably with newswire spam. I just ignore the whole thing by dragging the bottom of the window below the taskbar. There's your ignore feature for you. You don't need the newswire during a game especially if you're on vent anyway.

I wanted to revamp the entire message system to work more like nubolo (which I think let you ignore certain players) and kill spamming/useless messages but it has to wait until Sticks/Min decide how they plan to work cross platform and draw the GUI.
Also, I'm never on vent, and I disable status messages about lgm deaths, ect. But I do agree that spamming was a bit much.

Well, I honestly plan on trying a re-write using Qt. But that's probably a discussion for another thread or the wiki, and not something that will be started on anytime soon.
That being said, there's absolutely nothing stopping you from doing the work now and having it in 1.17 or 1.18. Code up a menu option that pops open a non-modal dialog box and emulate nubolo's functionality in that. There's already seemingly TONS of non-modals in WinBolo right now so the code is there, it's just a pain in the ass to do.
