Min's post with MacAurthur giving him advice sparked my interest and made me think of my old bolo coach erebus... Think back, who spent hours yelling at you to make you into the bolo stud you are today????
Mac taught me that not dying was one of the most important things you can do.
Nemokrad taught me to send LGMs on the fly.
Elvis brought me from the opens into IRC.
Min - I think - stated that I should always be doing something.
Bumps/Greed, Sloth, Drad and a few others that I'm probably forgetting were my mentors. KuJo attempted to teach me pillwarring but I still blow at it.

I took pieces of advice and style from mostly everyone, and learned how to multi-task after watching Severian's screen-captured videos about 5 or 6 years ago.
Most notable mentors, when I started: Sheeps, FireIce, Min, and LRL. Might be forgetting a few names, though..
I may not have mastered any of all these skills but I did pick up on them from these mentors
Knuck taught me pill takes
Min taught me about strategy
Addy taught me how to listen and not get distracted
Chaps taught me how to be persistent and not die
Fubes taught me how to have fun
Zap taught me opens (and Sev too)
enigma taught me to have faith in a player
UD - I just watched and learned the importance of speed and time trials on CT3.
Jason8 taught me that I CAN win a 1x1
Spin taught me that it is just a game
DS taught me to love the game and the opening moves.
Stimpy taught me to always be doing something
FF taught me signaling to double and dec
FI practically forced me to change my key set up from the default so I could drive and shoot with one hand.
Zet and Poe both demonstrated one shot sniping and also the risks of carrying too many pills on your tank.
I think I may have learned a few things from Der and Lance if I could just figure out what they were trying to communicate to me.
I know I still sux but I have been paying attention to all of your advice and try hard to apply it all.
Did I miss any?

I also taught you to turn your framerate up ;)
Min
AJR got me into IRC from an open.
My very first mentors (for winbolo) were AJR, unknown soldier and Min. This was under a previous handle I used.
Then when I came back to winbolo (around the time that ren had just started playing as well) my biggest mentors were probably Severian and fireice. Both of them were patient with me in 1x1 and would point out the mistakes I would do very clearly. Severian I remember for giving me the biggest tip for 1x1 after he pwned me in under 2 minutes (it was my first real 1x1): take bases, the early pill isnt worth it :D. LRL and most of the other regulars would also point out mistakes and give me tips. Most of the rest I got from watching.
I was then an on/off player for quite a while. I was progressing at the same rate as Desmo (who I caught up with pretty quickly). Wuff and I were also at the same skill level and would have many sparring duels in mostly opens.
Also I must mention sheeps and lancelot, they both in their own ways provided me with a lot of insight on how to become a better player.
Lancelot was especially vocal, and I think I've become a better bolo player because of this. He's a good drill sergeant that won't take any BS.
I still learn a lot today...from watching other people....in game or in replays. I don't care if they are good or not so good, there are bits you can learn from pretty much anyone.
Ren was always willing to give me advice on my pill takes, and a lot of aspects of my game
Winger was probably one of the more influential players on me, we played a lot together and was always good about critiquing my game
I dunno there's a ton of players who made me enjoy the game and want me to get better, Dust, Lance, Fermat, Jhood, Acro, Min, Sethos, x-man, Hellscream, Fubar, Knuckles (even if he is a bitch :D )
I've been away from bolo for 14 years, I'm back :) Just wanna say greetings to ya'll.
My mentor? it was grinch, he had mad LGM shootin skills.
Ed
my bolo mentors nd other people ive learned a lot from were addbot, chaps, derami, enigma, lance, min nd another great mentor of mine i have to say has always bn experience itself. :]
Dust - he inspired me. I remember when I first started playing in opens and saw Dust and thought he was the greatest player alive.
Stimpy/Sticks/spart/skywalker/and more.. - Taught me as a noob. When i first joined IRC and remember my first open with sticks and stimpy just yelling at me not to move pills lol. Great advice; if you suck, dont do anything offensive. it got me a lot better defensively.
Lance - Improved my playing in every way. From day 1 to right now he always told me exactly what I did well and wrong. The best advice in bolo is criticism. I think lance is one of the best mentors in bolo. you just have to be ok with the harsh tone haha.
Zach - Taught me to be fast! I know he doesn’t know this but he was my biggest idle in bolo. he could take pills down faster than ANYONE in bolo. Perfect pillwarer and perfect tactical player. I mimicked him for years.
Ren - from good to great. Ryan and I are good friends. He taught me how to be better than average and how to think like a champion. I remember we would both try and play (and constantly get destroyed by) Zach. We together would practice in ct3 and other maps. practicing strategy and technique. we would have INCREDIBLE 2x2s against lance and spart. those were the days. By far the best player to ever play winbolo is Ren.
Ud - Taught me not to lose lgm. Playing him 1x1 was insane. 1 mistake and the game was over. I basically never beat him. he was a very good tactical player and skilled thinking. Ren, Ud, and myself would all play and practice together as we were all getting better. it was great playing with the 2 best in winbolo before they both quit.
HAHA - rival. We both started at the same time. we would play opens together and hate on each other but dust would own us both haha. I think I got to IRC first and then I got him in there after that. We got good together, def my winbolo brother. Me Ren HAHA were of course Elit3 with that stupid clan we made just to piss off lance and ud haha. good times
AJR - keyboard setup. He convinced me to changed my keys from standard to the best setup possible. I sucked ass for at least a month but lets face it, I was already horrible at the time. Without him showing me how to set up my keys I would not be any good today.
GB - this is gunna piss everyone off but hes been helping me lately think outside the box. He has the potential to be one of the best in winbolo. I look at his strengths and try and mimic them today. He thinks outside the box when playing.
There are many others that tought my here and there. Skywalker, boatmaker, lrl, sev, dz, mad scout, chuck norris...
never really had a mentor because i havent been around for that long. Id say min's strategy page sure helped me out to learn basic pill takes and some strategy. but it is hard to get strategy from reading a page, the key is just to keep playing and learning in the game from actual experience :).
i kinda have to disagree with spin though. gameboy isnt that good at all...the fucker plays everyday so hes always in top form...when i take weeks off and come back sure,
i am always rusty and my aims off so he will beat me the first few games but once you remember your stategy against his retarded spikes and deep plants and base rapes you realize that beating gameboy is simple.
ok well I thought about it and everyone is right. I even told GB he was to predictable but I will give him this, he plays different that most. And for me I’m trying to incorporate what he does well and discard the crap. also, in winbolo (esp in 1x1) you cannot play the same every time. I’m trying to learn new techniques to keep opponents guessing. So all in all he has tough me to think of new opportunities that I did not think of before. He is not a great player or anything like that.
ALSO... I forgot to mention some people and need to realize who actually got me to where I am today.
Ren, I said before but he is 100% the player who made me who i am today. he was the best player to ever play this game. min and other may disagree but they are wrong.
also Derami is constantly challenging me and tough me to play better and more on my toes. he has become one of the best players in winbolo. Also chaps is very good but thinks he’s much better than he actually is... anytime chaps... anytime
Best player you ever played Spin but definitely not the best ever.
I'd have to say the best player I ever played was sloth. Sometimes we would ally and he wouldn't use his lgm all game as a handicap for our team. To force me to learn how to use my lgm properly. Yet somehow he was still very effective. We mowed down teams playing handicapped like that.
Min
My mentors were WD drad mac mel Cuda KuJo. Mac was my main mentor we use to play 1v1 just about everyday for a year. Our 1v1's were very interesting because we played totally different styles. I think the pillwar/a little bit conservative 1v1 strategy that UD Mel Fubar and I use is the most effective way to consistently win a 1v1. Especially vs the new breed of players that like to be aggressive and extend pills into the pill line. The aggressive style will win games but they will not consistently beat players which use patience to their advantage.
I remember teaching Ren and Zach. Everyone says they are great players but the way i play they don't give me as much problems as a player like Min(not as highly regarded) gives me tons of problems.
I for one don't like the new bolo as much as the old bolo. Now days if you lay one mine or go rape bases players get pissed off because your "ruining the game". That is part of the game and if you do it right you will become a better player. The whole lay a few mines to kill someone/defend yourself is not "carpet mining". And for killing tree's, your enemy is down to one quad and they have an 11-5 pill lead, killing there trees is not a dirty strategy. If they want to sit in the quad with the pill lead its fair game to kill there trees. The best player at raping bases/back harassing is Min that little bastard will piss you off the whole game.
The best player i have ever played is Sloth. I think he is the only player i have a losing record to in 1v1. I was a good player and i played with sloth for a week and i became an elite player because of some of the amazing things i seen on pill view. He taught me how to change the "flow" of the game. Some guy trolling and rumored to be Santa or Grinch was the second best player i know. Sev Mac Mel are also the best of the best.
