How i set up my keys

Mar 21, 2010 19:12 How i set up my keys
When i was new I was taught by AJR how he set up his keys and what he and now I think is the most efficient way to set up your keys to play winbolo.

MOVING:wsad (w=forward,s=stop,a=left,d=right)

SHOOTING: space bar

MINES: Shift

Scrolling: 8546 (8=up,5=down,4=left,6=right) **ON THE NUMBER PAD

Gun Sight Range: 79 (7=decrease, 9=increase) **ON THE NUMBER PAD

NOTE: It is important to turn off automatic scrolling. This allows for me to be moving around freely and have my screen stay still as I can keep my hand ready to replant something as soon as my enemies turn away. (best in pillwar)

the 79 gun sight range is VERY IMPORTANT. this is how Im good at sniping LGMS. my hands are already on 8546 to scroll and now i can easily change my gun sight to snipe LGMS.

pretty similar to mine...AJR also helped in my intial key setup...then i took it from there and let it evolve....

....sometimes i have to change mine for different keyboards i find.

The keys I use:

arrows = driving

ctrl = shoot

numberpad:
8456 = scrolling
2 = mines
1 = pillview
3 = tank view

mouse wheel for gunsight

I also use auto slowdown and always have auto scrolling off.

mouse wheel for gun sight is not precise enough for me. at least in my opinion

ok here goes, people have asked what setup i have for a while now, ever since i said i use both arrows and the standard 'esdf' setup. i have my own key setup, because of the laptop i have, which is what i play bolo on, never a desktop

anyhow, i use standard pointy arrows as movement, with ijkl to scroll the screen, the proximity of these keys means i can do both at once, as well as increase and decrease gun range [which are 'y' and 'h' respectively] and shoot [space] all at one time. interchanging hands when necessary, depending on how aware i am of the field, and/or what i plan to do if i am unopposed.

my mouse is not exactly far away from the arrows, in fact it is close enough so that i can switch both my hands around without it even affecting tank auto-slowdown enough to make a difference to how i play. leaving me with 2 options of how to play bolo -

1. control the tank, shooting, mines, gun range, everything that doesnt require a mouse with my left hand. and the mouse with my right

2. use my right hand to control the tank only, my left to control scrolling the field, gun range and the trigger, leaving me only with the option to switch hands when i need to control the lgm [which skillwise, i am neither shite, nor am i fantastic But then again, my bolo skills in general are neither shite, nor fantastic]

mines i have assigned to 'r' for the time being, not as a preference, just to deter me from using them, as there is a massive song and dance about it these days [mainly from new players] which id rather avoid. not that i dont mind mines being used against me, i find it is easier to use them sparingly and focus my improvements on other things, maybe ill bring back using them someday... maybe ill use them in the next game, youll never know. its cool catching people by surprise 8) I also do this to avoid being a predictable player

i would NOT recommend this setup to any newer players, or any player at all, it simply works for me. which is why i made this post, i tried using everyones elses way, to no avail, i may change it when i dont have a weird keyboard though.

ciao

I changed the default keysetup that the game gives when you first installed it when I updated the code on 1.16 I think? The default keysetup should be adequate for allowing people to play decently. Its a standard two handed setup, esdf for movement, shift for mining, spacebar for shooting, and keypad for scrolling. Plus and enter on the keypad for aimer movement.

I for about tank view/pillbox view. I use ENTER for tank view. The key directly to the left of enter (') I use for pillbox view

i agree spin, it isnt very precise at all but thats how i've always done it and it works for me (most of the time).

i would prefer to use the +/- keys but am a little apprehensive of not getting the hang of it.

maybe in the future i will change my key setup to what's recommended, if needs be, but for now ill make do. :)

Spin.

Thanks for the post on your key setup!
i decided to give your setup a try and to my great surprise i found it so much easier!
The only difference i now have to my key setup from yours is i find it easier to shoot with shift and mine with spacebar whereas you have it the other way around. Must be because i was using ctrl to shoot and arrows to drive before.
I thought it would feel too 'alien' for me to change my keys but in actual fact i find it so much easier and relaxed! :D
Didnt take alot of getting used to at all.

Id definatley recommend other players to try spins setup especially if theyve been using a similar setup to me.

The main benefits are:

1- it feels more comfortable having your hands further apart rather than cramped.

2- It is quicker to get onto the mouse after scrolling so not as 'rushed' as before.

3- It makes more sense to have your gunsight control on the number pad as you dont have to change to the mouse (to use the wheel) in order to adjust, and most of the time u will be scrolling when u see an incoming lgm anyways.

Ive only played 2 games so far with the new setup so when i (and im sure i will) find more benefits of this new setup i will edit this post.

And Spin. Thanks again! :D

More benfits:

4- gunsights seem to adjust quicker using keys instead of mousewheel plus on the mouse wheel it is difficult to decrease the sight all the way down without having to roll it twice. :)

nice dude thats awesome. I honestly think everyone should use a setup like this if they really want to get good at LGM kills. it will help ALOT. also a very comfortable set up as well.

default keys were changed to edsf, shift for mine, keypad for scrolling keypad plus and enter for gunsight moving in december 2008? so, very close to spin's key setup. If new players stick with those keys, they won't have to many problems.

For a quick increase/decrease in gunsight, use the mousewheel. Otherwise, use the keyboard. I didn't write it with this in mind, but that's how it turned out.
