State of Bolo

Jun 04, 2010 21:26 State of Bolo
Hey I haven't played in probably over a year. Came back a few days ago because I love the game and wanted to see what was up.

I found some of the same things that caused me to stop playing previously:

Honestly I think one of the main things was the continual banning of players by Min. I found it almost laughable that there were very recent posts from 2010 with Min doing the same thing that he always does. Banning players and setting rules..... I really don't know what it is but I think that he must get some power trip from the whole thing which is ridiculous. I guess its fortunate that he takes the time to moderate and host a server, but actually I don't know whether ends up being good or bad for Bolo.

Its clear that some players will ruin games because they want to or don't know the rules. But why don't you just put a password on the strict tournament games and leave the open games open. If someone who knows the password ruins games, thats a different story. You can change the password or deal with it personally.

Anyway, I remember in the good days of Winbolo there wasn't that much banning until Min came along. People had a good bolo spirit, and remembered that it is all a game, and you can take some time to teach new players the game....

Couple of things, I stopped 'banning' people back in 2003 when LRL took control of the irc server. I left at that point. Its been a whole lot longer than 1 year for you mac. Sure, you may have jumped on an played a couple of games a year ago, but you certainly don't know whats going on. The people who are currently being 'banned' are people who play on my server, the one I pay for. If you have a problem with how I administrate my personal resources, well, to put it quite plainly ... go fuck yourself ... Back when you were around and I was banning players, people were nice to each other. I made mistakes back then (its been 9 years mac, just in case you didn't notice the clock ticking) but I don't regret making sure people were nice to each other. The way people in this community treat each other these days makes me want to puke. I don't get any power trip from banning people from an internet game to even suggest I do is as you said, ridiculous. I've never had a power trip from doing that.

I was hosting my server for awhile, and back during spring break I decided to play a game of bolo, which I hadn't done in a long long time. It was a 3x4 game, I was on the 3 side. I sat there waiting for the go like always. The -entire enemy team- all 4 of them jumped go ...... and farmed before go. You know why they did? because they thought they could get away with it. I was furious. 4 players out of 7 in a game jumping go. This -ruined the game for me- it made it not fun, I did not enjoy it. Since then, I've been enforcing the basic rules that have been in place for years. And guess what, its rare to see people jumping go, were as before, -every single game- had a go jumper in it because they thought it was ok!!!! This is passworded games, this is non-passworded games, this is any game they played in. I've had alot of people thank me for making the game more enjoyable for them again.

First reason we don't put a password on the strict games is this. We ran that way for years, and it slowly killed the game off. new players couldn't play, and thus they didn't play. The games are not passworded by default to prevent this from occurring again. More people are playing this game, people are playing and sticking around again. (it also allows people to play without having to come on IRC, which is a huge perk, IRC doesn't really provide a good environment)

Second reason, if people join a strict game, they can follow the rules. Simple as that. If they want to fuck around, that's what the open game is for. The people who like to ruin games, tend to know the password. And if we change it they just get the new one, passworded games are ineffective in dealing with the players that like to screw up games.

Rose colored goggles buddy, you keep looking at the past through them, making out like I'm the 'worst thing that has ever happened to bolo' as you told someone in game a couple days ago. Sorry to say, but your wrong, when I became an op, I continued with the status quo. I recall multiple times while I was a newbie people being banned, this was a regular occurrence. You just don't know, or you don't care to remember. People were banned for colors, they were banned because the channel was supposed to be 'g rated' and they were swearing up a storm. I didn't make those rules, I just enforced them once I was made an operator. because that's what I thought elvis wanted. Hate me for it if you like, but it makes very little difference. There was a few instances back then that I definitely should have dealt with differently. But back then we also had a much nicer crowd in general. People were nicer to each other. That is no longer the case here. But then people don't really get 'banned' from the irc channel, only the game bots. And they only get banned for the stated rules, go jumping etc. I haven't yet banned someone just because they pissed me off. Which I admit I did back in the good ol' days. People change, its been 10 years since i was first made a channel operator.

So, I think at this point, you've got a few choices. Stick around, play some bolo, teach some of these newbs how to actually play. Since noone else has bothered. Or, continue to dwell on the past and think about how back then I was a big asshole. Either way is fine with me, I'll be here next time you come back, and probably the time after that also, etc. We both want the same thing, we always have, for people to play bolo, and have fun. That's what this is all about anyways.

There are certainly more players now than when I joined, Ive also found Min to be quite pleasant, as are all the bot owners when your not hacking or ruining games on their bots. Is anyone in a position to ask for more?
Jun 04, 2010 23:28
ps, my dream for winbolo is a completely community moderated game, that doesn't require banning, or any 'operators' to kick anyone. Let it be self policing, that way we can just spend our time playing the game.

Min
Jun 05, 2010 04:18 ...
I think min has shown a lot of restraint and patience with a lot of people.

Namely people like gameboy and rider.

Heck I would have banned gameboy a long time ago....mostly because I hate his guts. I know its a shit reason, but that's just me (there are more reasonable secondary reasons...but they are so many and I cant be bothered.)

But then we would have lost a person to beat on and humiliate in games....and ling would have lost a contact to hook up with asian chicks.

Rider I would have given a suspension of maybe a month....in my rashness this could have caused him to leave the game....same goes for ling.

But Rider has since gotten his act together somewhat and become more sensible and respectful....and has gotten better too (again somewhat). All because Min again gave him the benefit of the doubt.

Ling I have my doubts about still, but I'm following the policy of live and let live with him and gameboy...and there are of course many games of bolo happening that otherwise wouldnt have happened if both weren't around.

And of course there are many other examples....so I for one think min makes a great bolo server host (considering it is his personal investment) with fair demands on its non-paying clients (all of which are designed to both increase strict playing and make sure strict games aren't ruined and fun compromised).

bah, speak what you want about min, i cant speak on his early years with the game before the split but as of right now hes running HIS server very fairly. no one that has been banned from his server was unjust. his rules are simple.

dont mess up games(strict), dont jump go, dont prefarm. dont start on land.

besides mac, if he wanted to ban someone because they are just stupid hes welcome to. its his personal server. Clearly said in this statement
If you have a problem with how I administrate my personal resources, well, to put it quite plainly ... go fuck yourself

but, welcome back!

Hmmm... well I'm glad Min admits that he was a bit overbearing in the early years. Its good to see. As far as your server, your right if its your server you can do whatever the hell you want with it. I'm happy to have played some games on your server, thanks.

Maybe Min has turned a new leaf?! Just from scrolling the posts though after I joined I saw 3-4 recent Ban posts: "Ling is now banned", "Chaps is banned", "1234567 is banned", "Another player banned. This time, 'cold finger'", etc... and Rules. so it appeared everything was as old.

Heh it was pretty funny I started playing a strict game AFTER "Me" joined and started before go taking half the bases. Coldfinger of all people told me that I was going to be banned! :) I guess Min has converted some people to following the rules. I do remember the name Ling, he was an ass...

Anyway, well I hope Winbolo lives on and grows. Whatup FUBAR, glad to see your still here. I haven't logged on to mIRC, maybe I'll see whats going on there...

Your not gonna get banned unless you do something stupid, true story
Jun 07, 2010 23:07
Min is passionate about bolo. There are few who care as much as he does about the health of the winbolo community.

I've watched from the sidelines while he's banned and unbanned various people. These individuals really were causing problems and ruining everyone's fun. After they've gone through 'Min's Re-Education Camp' they come back to the game with a heap more respect.

Good job, Min.

Min sometimes reacts in a knee-jerk fashion. There are people - myself included - who incur his wrath when no harm or disrespect was intended. He will cool off quickly though, if you don't become infantile in your counter-responses.

Minbot is but one of three game bots. It's quite simple to use another.
Jun 08, 2010 18:28
dont hate nemo!

but i think the reason the majority of people use minbot is because its just easier to type "min"

call me crazy.

i also think its because minbot has just about ALWAYS been there. its the one bot that you know is gong to be online.

i dont mind supporting a bot where there is consequences for your actions if you are a shit head.
Jun 10, 2010 09:28
Here here.
i also dont mind supporting minbot. i dont have a problem with the way min run's things after all he is just trying to make the community a fairer place and our games more fun. if you dont like the way min runs things then use another bot as already mentioned :D

Min..... you're a d00d in my book matey! always on hand to dish out helpful advice, and on several occasions, has gone well out of his way to help me when he didnt have to!

Thanks dood. keep up the good work!
Most of us love you :D

Interesting discussion here. It's good to see that some people are still playing. I would also like to mention that it's great to see that WinBolo has been released under the GNU. That being said, I am still waiting for a new version of LinBolo to come out. :D

Jhood's working on a port using the Qt framework from what I hear. I'm fixing to dump Windows as soon as I can kick my Counter-Strike habit.
