winbolods locks up and crashes

Feb 27, 2003 00:39 winbolods locks up and crashes
Mebbe its just me, but let me describe what is happening.

I have WinXP Prof. no updates. On a dialup modem.
Using Winbolo1.12, several times today created new games through Winbolo. Everything plays fine at first. When 1 person quits, no matter how many people are in the game, whatever I am shooting at stops being destroyed and within seconds Winbolo quits to single-player mode. Moments later, I get the error report screen from Windows to report and error to Microsoft because then winbolods stops responding and locks up. Once I get winbolods to stop running, my internet connection no longer responds. I must then manually disconnect and reconnect before I can get back on.

I am sure some of this is related to how winbolo interacts with the gaming site, but I know errors when I see them, too.

Can you provide more information?

How many players do you have in the game?
Is it the first/last/middle player that leaves?
What speed is your modem?
Are you running via the command line server or starting it from inside WinBolo?

The problem may be related to how many people are connected to your dialup. WinBolo requires 1-3K/sec per player. So if you are trying to have any more then 2 players on a dialup modem you will probably run into trouble based simply on the fact your connection can't keep up.

If you believe it is this you can try adding the -nowinbolonet command line argument to turn it off.

Elvis, it looks like he is starting from winbolo:

Here are some ideas:

- try running winbolods from command line. do you have the same problem? are there any out of the ordinary messages on the server window?

- try running another copy of winbolo and join your own game. This would have nearly no lag. Does it still crash?

Feb 27, 2003 11:34 -maxplayers flag
The next version will contain a -maxplayers dedicated server flag which will limit the number of players your server will have.

I'll try some of those suggestions. I think part of the problem was that I was on a dialup modem, but it was really strange that when someone quit the game, the entire game would end, dropping me into single-player mode.
This problem happened in multiple ways. After I posted this, I joined a game hosted by Peoples Alliance. About 5 minutes into the game, it appeared that he quit the game, then I was dropped to single-player mode. After checking the game archive of that game later on the winbolo.net website, I found that it was actually my connection that dropped and was recorded as "Geuis has left the game." People's was able to keep playing for a few minutes after that.
In the 2 or 3 other games where this occurred, in one I was hosting a game and 1 person joined. That person quit the game(I am assuming) and then the game gave me the server quit message and dropped me to single-player. After this, my internet connection stopped responding, and then I got an error as winbolods crashed and was not responding. Winbolods crashing one of the things that *always* seems to happen. This is when games are created through winbolo, not using the independent server itself. Also, once winbolods crashes, my connection stops working altogether, and I must disconnect/reconnect or reboot my machine.
