It doesnt matter how long the song is, its still illegal. The RIAA website will tell you that.
Personal use isnt giving out copies to your friends, thats called breaking federal law.
Using p2p for personal use, like sending copys of YOUR work to others, is okay.
Also, just because you bought something, does not entitle you to release it, you have to buy the RIGHTS to release it.
Don't believe everything they print on a sales package designed by a record company, do you think they are unbiased?

Its federal law.
Your opinion is STILL WRONG :lol:

I can't be sure; not knowing details of the laws, but I believe Trillion is correct.

If we get a 'pay for each song downloaded' site for windows users, I'm there, dude. (better be no more than $1 a song) I'm sick to death of paying $15-16 or even $18 for an album with 2 good tracks on it. It's ludicrous.

move to canada then, law in canada states that I can buy a cd, copy it, give that original cd to my friend, and they can copy it, etc.... and its been found that this law is also applicable to the sharing that p2p programs allow. I don't feel like digging out the details though, I think its called the millenium copyright act or something.

Section 107. Limitations on exclusive rights:
Fair Use.

Notwithstanding the provisions of sections 106 and 106A, the fair use of a copyrighted work, including such use by reproduction in copies or phonorecords or by any other means specified by that section, for the purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research, is not an infringement of copyright. In determining whether the use made of a work in any particular case is a fair use the factors to be considered shall include-

(1) the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes;

(2) the nature of the copyrighted work;

(3) the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole; and

(4) the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work.

The fact that a work is unpublished shall not itself bar a finding of fair use if such finding is made upon consideration of all the above factors."

-United States Copyright Act

Unauthorized duplication is a violation of applicable laws.

I believe 'Fair Use' means you can make one copy of it for personal use, like a backup. Sheeps, your opinion is WRONG. :P

yay! d12 rocks!

Thats why Napster was shut down. Of course they got hit harder because they were centralized, but KaZaa will have its day...

Click here for the story about a judge ruling that file-swapping tools are legal. And as for why Napster shut down? Well, you could only trade *.mp3 files for a long time. Since songs in mp3 format are the reason for all this copyright bally-hoo, and Napster was created for the sole purpose of trading *.mp3 files, I think the judges ruled correctly on that one.
