IRC is internet relay chat, its a type of chatroom, there are thousands available.

mIRC is a IRC chat client, it allows you to connect to irc servers and chat with the people located there. www.mirc.com

winbolo.us is the domain name that lrl registered. he also has a irc server running at that location. the main irc server is irc.winbolo.com and his is irc.winbolo.us ....

Ok help me min. Streetz showed me how to get there, but my computer won't load the chat. I get a white page with a little x in a box and that's it. I went and downloaded an 'irc applet' off the internet hoping that would help. However, the applet program came without an installer! Now I have irc applet folders with all sorts of stuff in there but no way to make the chat work.

addendum: I read the IRC FAQ. This seems to be very much like my fiasco with FTP Voyager. I couldn't figure out how to work that either. :( :(

Also, am I to assume 14 year olds can build, pay for, operate and maintain web servers? When I think of 'server' I think of a college campus or a business. anyone can operate them? (No insult intended to LRL)

I think a server is just a regular computer with an always-on connection, and a domain name pointing to it. So yes, if they can afford it. :D
Sep 24, 2003 23:54
Besides, I'm 16 and I've built several servers. In fact, one was dedicated to Winbolo so our Language of Computers class (the geeky techsupport kids) could play Bolo on our downtime. I loved that class.

Acro, if u need an awesome tutorial about how to use mIRC to connect to the winbolo.com server (or whatever server u want), I suggest that u check out my pictorial winbolo mIRC tutorial which can be found here. This seems to be a pretty staight-forward idiotproof mIRC tutorial with pictures showing u how to do EVERYTHING. (the tutorial is written by me, of course)

It may need to be 'super idiot-proof to work for me, hehe. Sorry maxx, your link gave me 'Page Not Found'.
Sep 25, 2003 00:15

Sep 25, 2003 00:31
Nope, still not found.
Sep 25, 2003 02:19
Works now.....I'll read it tomorrow. This should help me with Error 1303: 'Computer Skills Not Found.'
:o

Winbolo.us is just a domain name, many people refer to it as “.us” and winbolo.com as “.com” Winbolo.us merely provides services to the winbolo community.

I believe min covered what IRC is. If Streetz gave you a URL like http://javairc.winbolo.us this is a java client. Part of your web browsing software, Internet Explorer 6 should run it ok, unless you installed sun-java. If you wish to join an IRC server and chat with other players I’d recommend you install mIRC. However the java clients available should work fine for you :)

No insult taken :)

The word server has many meanings. Someone who serves food and drink is commonly considered a server. But in computer terminology it means a computer that processes requests for files, WebPages, information and therefore replies with the requested information. Servers aren’t often just a regular computer; most run specialty software and special operating systems and many have dual or more processors.

I hope this helps you

Acro, plz tell me if my tutorial helped u at all.
Sep 25, 2003 23:04
Seems to be in order Maxx. I doubt it could be done much better, although the original writers probably wouldn't include 'flying shit' in their own tutorial hehe. Btw, r u a potato farmer or somethin'?
Sep 25, 2003 23:11
Also, I'm not too jolly on having to pay $20 for software just to chat. Why; when instant messaging programs are free.
Sep 25, 2003 23:32
U don't HAVE to pay. They can't force u. Just use the programme. Btw, im not a tater farmer, i just like potatos, ALOT. Nice to know that it helped u out tho.

1. Internet Relay Chat is the largest chat medium in the world. The best site for learning about IRC is probably www.irchelp.org.

2. IRC is broken up into networks. Only users connected to the same network can communicate with each other. Our server is irc.winbolo.com.

3. mIRC is a very popular IRC client for Windows. Download it at www.mirc.com. You can use MaddMaxx's tutorial to set it up. Since you are having trouble with Java, I suggest that you try this.

4. Winbolo.us is LRL's domain.

Just to clarify a server, it can be any automated service. Example: you leave Kazaa minimized and other users download your music.
