Many monthes ago, my friend, UNderdog attempted to organize a tournament. The only problem was that it was difficult to get people to 1x1. Some excuse always came up or the player/s wasn't available to play. I'm suggesting we give it another try. I realize this tournament could possibly go for monthes, but I think we're all young and not going anywhere anytime soon. The way I envision this tourney is that there are three levels of players. Six players in each level. Giving the tournament a total of eighteen players. Each player would have a best out of three 1x1 against the opposing player. After losing to two players they would be out of the contest(double elimination). The three levels in my mind would be six of the really good players in my eyes, six of the good players, and lastly, six of the above average players. Sorry newbies. I would put the following six players in the first group: Severian, Underdog, Zach, Sheeps, Stimpy, and Madscout. The second group would be Bluesnake, Saiyan, Pawn, LRL, Sticks, and myself. The last group would include: Streetz, Q-man, Hellscream, Ren(if available), Neo, and Keysersore. Please remember these are just groups according to my opinion and I'm sorry If I've left people out. Once a winner is determined out of the second and third groups those two winboloers will play each other. After determining a winner from that round that winner will advance to play the last participant. I reccommend if this goes through that every game should have an observer. Also that every game be ranked. I will set up a poll for a week or more to see how much interest there is in this. PLease remember this is just to see interest and possible ideas towards this. I have no intention of slighting anyone, that may have been left out.

also by playing this tournament, we as a community can have a better grasp of how people should be really ranked, b/c I believe the wbn ranking system is bogus. Well, lets see how it does

this is a great idea. the reason people dont like to play 1x1 is becuse they know they are going to lose before they even start....no one wants to start a game that they know have no chance of winning. and this turney dont have to be just the good players....match up your skills and play eachother. its not hard...just get alittle organized. thats y we have the matchup forum that no one really looks at....i say good thinkin sky. this will get more players better faster. make teams....and play.
It's a fine idea in theory. The following is a clip from the mac bolo news page from 1997, available at

Cup Kax est mort. Well it's official, Kax called off the tournament due to inadequate participation in the current, second round. The structure of the tournament really depends on people playing their games, and this didn't happen. Kax did single out some Bolo diehards: "Athena & Smeagol played every one of their 1x1 games in both round one and round two, and C++ played all but one, and I think that's great." It's still a remarkable achievement if you consider that well over 100 Cup Kax tournament games were played over the past few months! Kax's devotion and hard work set an excellent example for future tournament organizers.

It's not really about how great I am (that's implied!); rather, the point is that these things tend to get momentum, then fizzle, and there's shit all you can do about it. But I wish y'all luck nonetheless. One thing is to prepare to have people bitch about who their opponents turn out to be. Another is that you need to figure out what to do if two players "just can't find time" to play a game. Maybe when it's my turn to play UD, I'm only available for 15 minutes a day, and it's conveniently when he's in class. Does that mean I forfeit? What if it's true? How would you ever know the difference? If you just flip a coin at that point, maybe I'll do it intentionally, b/c normally I wouldn't have a 50% chance of winning.
As I said, Sky, may the Force be with you on this one.

yay! bet let us newbs play too! :D
Yes i will be able to play and being in the 3rd group is goign to be great :) i think you should switch me and blue well that is if im not rusty...
good idea sky im with you..
I think this is a very good idea sky. I hope we can make this tournament work. I look forward to playing everyone.
great idea, but you know what happen to the last ibl. it turn into a "bitch-fest" as jolo said in his rant.
Great idea sky, but might i suggest that the "levels" be changed around? I would think it be best if you played it out like ncaa college basketball does... seeds. That way one supreme player (ex:sev?..seed (1)) play a noob(seed 16). And the but the seeds could depend on how many players enter the tournament. Who knows..a noob could possibly pull a victory? That way when it gets down to the "final four" you may have some good matches. Quiet possibly even using the "final four" in a 2x2 for a tag title?! Either way it sound like a nice idea...just gather more info and post in here, i may want to play. *cough* *cought*....min, sj, flad..?
My suggestion is a round robin, with maybe 4 or 8 groups, depending on the number of players. The top two players each each group then play in a bracket format. We could also run two brackets (The best players in the top bracket, the best of the rest in a second bracket).
ROUND-ROBIN format:
A win would count as 1 point, a loss 0 points. This way, you would avoid eliminating newbies right off the bat, and they would get to play everyone in their group.
BRACKET:
It could be a single or double elimination, or a seeded format.
GAME PLAY:
Each player would post time periods when they are not available, and when the can play. Games windows are scheduled based on this.
Each round would consist of a start time period and an end time period. The games has to be played within this window of time. If the game is not played within the timeframe, then the player avoiding the match would forfeit the game.
I would also suggest a best of three series, instead of a single game.
Anyway, just my thoughts
Wonka, that sounds a lot like the IBL except that it was an ongoing season instead of a tournament. We had a lot of players sign up but usually only enough players showed up for 2 groups, which equaled 8 players. In addition to poor showing compared to original sign-up, the organizers said it was a pain in the butt to set up games everyweek.
While I think a tournament is a great idea, it just doesn't seem like it'd work. We do have 30 clients in #winbolo sometimes but thats usually only once a week. We don't have a large enough dedicated player base for this to happen. But if this were to happen, I'd try to start it when more people play, which doesn't seem like it'd be right now as a lot of people go back to school.
Why don't we first have some sign up sheet so we can see who is playing. Then we will have pre-tournament rounds with the entries playing each other. Who will play each other will be chosen at random, with a flip of a coin, or a drawing of the name, etc. No shows will be considered a forfit. The pre-tournament rounds will continue until there are 10 players left, who have won and will be in the real tournament.
Then, with the 10 players, who will play who will also be drawn at random, as it isn't very fair when someone just decides who is better and who isn't, such as with that 3 levels idea. They will play until the final two players are at it. Then, once the winner has been decided, the prize will be me and other people flipping him off. No, not really.
How does this plan sound though?
I thought the idea here was a 1x1...
