WinBoloDS.exe error ???

Mar 03, 2003 23:12 WinBoloDS.exe error ???
Hey everyone...

When I try to host anykind of network game whether it be through TCP/IP or LAN I get an error that says to make sure the WinBoloDS.exe is in the same directory as WinBolo.exe. It is. I have tried disabling the winbolo.net feature in the software to no avail. I simply can't host a game.

I have uninstalled deleted the WinBolo dir and re-installed. No dice.

Does anyone have any idea what is causing this? I really want to play a LAN game.

Any help, will cause me to pledge allegiance to you. :)

Mar 03, 2003 23:27 Let's Revise this a bit!! :)
Hiya,

Ok just found something out...that is equally wierd. The good news is I can host a LAN game. The odd thing, and hence new problem, is that when I close winbolo the winbolo.exe stays as an active process even tho I closed the app. Relatedly, so does the WinboloDS.exe.

So, in order to host I have to ctrl-alt-del in WinXP and end those two processes before hosting again.

What do y'all think of that? In anycase WinBolo rocks! Just curious!

Thanks!!

John

What operating system are you using?

What format is the drive you installed winbolo to? Someone had problems with bolo finding not finding the brains directory on an ntfs drive.

Make sure there are no winbolo or winbolo processes running when you try to start a game.

If all else fails try running it by command line. There is a front-end for the server at http://www.cablelan.net/924/howtoserver.shtml as well as one I made at ftp://winbolo.dhs.org/others/WinBoloDsFE.exe although I haven't tested it with the latest version.

I know how to fix this WinBoloDS.exe. I have the exact same problem. What you have to do is try to start a game. this first attempt shall fail and give you the warning message. hit ok or whatever and try to start the same game with the exact same features and map (it should do this automatically) and presto! it will work. While this duz not remove the warning message it duz enable you to start a game. You r welcome!!

I wouldn't exactly call that "fixing" the problem. :o)

I too am now getting this problem. I was creating new games with no problem by running WinboloDSFE to start the new game. All of a sudden, its now telling me that Winbolods must be in the same folder, which it is. I also found that when I try to create a new game, there is a ms-dos batch file called "rungame" created. When I double-click this file, it then launches my game. I have tried putting winbolods and winbolodsfe in a new folder, still same problem. Have even deleted the "rungame" file to see if it was the reason, but still no-go. Anyone know what is causing this?

The rungame batch file has nothing to do with WinBolo or starting a server from the WinBolo client.

Its in the future plans to remove the requirements of running winbolods from WinBolo to start a network game. (from the client) - The Dedicated Server executable will still be available.

After looking into this further, I do not believe it is a problem with winbolods.
I was have been using WinBolodsFE(which I forgot where I downloaded it from) for a while. Never had a problem. I have even been using it up until today when it began giving me this problem.
I would put my money on the bet that johncandlekeep78 was also using WinBolodsFE.
Apparently the program creates and then launches a batch file called rungame that then triggers Winbolods to create a new game.
For whatever reason, that program, once it develops the error where it doesn't recognize that Winbolods is in the same folder, keeps the error, no matter what you do.

In the end, I created my own front end for winbolods in Visual Basic that does exactly what WinbolodsFE does and now my games launch just fine.

So, the problem is not with Winbolo, but with this now outdated front end for the game server.

Peace.

Great!

Do you want to post it somewhere and I'll add a link to it?

Heh. When I clean it up a bit, I will. Right now a lot of its hard-coded. Can't choose maps, etc. Made it in about 10 minutes so I could continue to create test servers to work with some new Winbolo software I'm writing. *That* software I'm not releasing for a while, because its in early stages of development. I may be setting up a website for it soon though, and will put out more info at the time.

Peace.

Hi geuis, I have to confess that I am the author of winbolodsfe :P

It's been quite a while since I wrote the front end, and it is outdated. I updated it at one time to version 2 (although it is still called WinBoloDSFE.exe, it says 2.0 in the title bar).

I actually used winbolods the other day on my xp computer but NOT with the Leave Window Open checked. The reason I have it use a batch file when "Leave Window Open" is checked, is because the command line can actually become too long to run directly (although this might be fixed past win 98 ).

Thinking about it now, it was silly of me not to release the source code to have other people update it if necessary. As you say it's easy to make your own anyway but it would be good to have a consistently updated front-end. If I can find the source code when I get back home (currently out of town) I'll release it.

Heh. I dunno why it stopped working and was giving those errors. It was working fine for me up to a couple days ago. I was in the middle of testing my tracker software and *BAM*, it just stopped working. Damnedest thing, too.
Suicide Jockey's front end is pretty good, too. I had a few problems with it at first, but now it seems to be running fine. I actually just ended up incorporating my frontend into my tracker, so I just click a button and it starts a game.
If you can find your code and release it, I bet there's a few people in the community that will take up making additions to it.
Mar 09, 2003 08:23 :)
What did you have problems with? so i can fix it and make it as easy to use as possible :) i would release source but nobody wants to see that crudeness lol
Mar 09, 2003 14:31
first time I ran it, when I clicked on the button on the top left to set the location of winbolods, it would give me an error, something like "Invalid directory" or something. Basically it was acting like it was saying it couldn't find winbolods before it gave me a chance to browse for it. After this, the program would crash.
After I restarted, problem went away. Go figure.

I think i got that fixed thank you very much :) time to add some of the new 1.13 commands :)
Mar 12, 2003 20:01 winbolodsfe source
I found the code to winbolodsfe and have released it here:

ftp://winbolo.dhs.org/others/winbolodsfe_source/

If you (or anyone) modifies it to support the latest version I will include it. I have plans to do this myself at one point but there are some other things I have to do first.
