Who's good with windows XP

Oct 25, 2003 20:17 Who's good with windows XP
Every once in a while, my computer does wacky things. Just recently, it crashed and gave me the blue screen. I got it running again, but now the following is occurring:

Clock is set to Dec 19 9999 and refuses to be changed.
Windows Media Player won't work because of the date of 9999
Cannot access Windows Update, gives error
Getting 'Security Warning' window online constantly

Norton has detected no viruses. Computer otherwise is running well.

Should I just wipe the hard drive (for the 6th time) and start over?

it possibly might be a type of  virus  that norton doesnt know abt, so maybe you should unnetwork it(if u have a network)

other than that knowledge, i dont really know much abt ur problem.(sry)

or maybe u just timewarped ;)

try doing a windows update. do a registry clean. check for adware and spyware (i dont think norton sees those) do a defrag. restart. do all that tell me if it works. if it still wont, go into bios setup, and run the tests, see if there are any hardware problems. if all else fails, format c drive, reinstall xp.

Ty for all your thoughts so far, everyone. Ud, I can't run Windows Update. It gives me an error.

How does one do a registry clean?

I wouldn't know where to check for adware or spyware.

Defrag has already been done.

I'm unfamiliar with bios setup tests...I guess I'm kinda a nOOb. :-)

Nobody has a reason to care, but given the fact that the WB community is made up of computer gurus in part, I figured I'd ask all of U about my insane computer.

your first problem is not being able to run windows update. if your copy of xp is pirated, that is your first problem. if not, you should go phone up ms product support, or phone your computer manufacturer.

registry problems are pretty rare, but they happen. there are programs you can download on the net that will fix that, just do a search.

adware and spyware can really fuck up computers. they often come bundled with software, such as kazaa or others. get adaware, which is the one i use. its free trial works great, and you can register it if you like it. there are many other similar programs, just find the one you like.]

each computer has a different bios. you press a fkey at startup, usually f2 or something, and you can run a hardware test. at least thats how mine works.

but if you have a legit copy of xp, i think contacting support is your first step. the first version of xp is full of bugs, and the update fixes just about all of them

yikes .......... I feel like I need to say something to make you avoid huge amounts of bad advice ........ it almost sounds like you should just take your computer to someone who knows what they are doing to avoid huge amounts of grief .... first thing you should address is your clock, get it set correctly, either using the BIOS, or figuring out why windows won't let you change it.... that will begin your path to fixing your problems.

my advise, blow comp up, go out and buy one that has not been infected with windows XP  , which is acctually a virus disguised as an os. Gates did it so he can watch people suffer.

Personally I have never had a problem with Windows XP; Windows ME on the other hand, was possibly the worst OS that I have ever used. I wouldn't recommend Windows ME to anyone, not even my worst enemy. Each to their own though I suppose.

I were in your situation, and had no idea what I was doing, I would do as Min says, take your computer to someone who knows what they are doing, in fact that would be the first thing I did - *shut down* and take it to someone reputable.

underdog, I have a priated copy of WinME (which works great!) and I winupdate it all the time!

Min, you were correct. I was able to change the time in BIOS setup. However if it doesn't hold over time, then I've got a bad mainboard battery or need a BIOS update. (Btw, those microsoft support people really kick ass)

HostileToy is also correct. WinME is the most disappointing OS of the bunch. Everyone I've talked to who does computer repair and assembly thinks WinME sux.

warning on the bios update, chances are thats not it, try the battery first, a new mainboard battery is like less than 2 dollars. if you do the mainboard battery thing and that doesn't help... and you decide to update your mainboard bios ...... updating your bios can be very dangerous, be very careful, and pray the power doesnt' go out in the middle.

Yikes! Maybe I'll not try that. If there's one thing I've learned, it's that

Computers are a pain in the ass!!!!
