Log Viewer

Nov 23, 2003 03:58 Log Viewer
Just thought I would post a link to something I've been working on every now and then: http://www.winbolo.net/lv/

When its finished (one day) the game server will be able to record a log of everything that happens in the game, from captures, takes, alliances, messages.

Things still to be decided:
1. Should players private messages be logged?
2. Should bases armour/shells/mines be logged?
3. Should each tanks armour/shells/mines/trees be logged?

The viewer is still very primitive. Only a play/pause button so far. No fast forward or any other operations.

One day it will be released.

I think all those things should be recorded......if u could switch tank views and see what their resources are it would provide alot of information on why they did what....It would eba very valuable resource tool.....should add the lag in there to so everyone can see whats really happening not this perfect game the server is logging......and will their be a way for the server to send to the client...or will bot owners just haev to waste their hd space and set up scripts to send at requests?
Nov 23, 2003 04:03
All TBA.

For its first release it will not be able to be streamed to a client. A 2x2 game is about 1Mb per 5 minutes of play uncompressed.

i think this would be awesome for determining if someone hacks

I quite agree underdog!

No, no, and no! Waste of your precious time, just hrry up an finnish it!

Maxx why should he released A half-assed project? It's better to release things that work perfectly and smoothly before letting morons like you use it....cuz god knows you'll fuck it up and bitch

Hehe, what i mean is: when will he release it? If it's going to take half of forever, he should get someone else to help him wit it.

:P
Nov 23, 2003 07:27 Nice
Like it Elvis, should be good when you get it up and running. Things like a log viewer would be ideal in tournament type situations such as we have just now with Sky's tourny.

Keep fighting the good fight sir 8)

What is half of forever? Since forever is infinite, what would be half of infinity? Would it just be infinity? But that can't be right, since you can't have two infinities. But if half of forever was any length of time whatsoever, then it wouldn't be forever. So is forever really just nothing?
But forever can't be nothing, since we use it to denote an infinite amount of time.

Huh? Oh. Going to bed now.

The actual definition of infinity is a number which cannot be divided by either itself or one. Natuarally, in the normal word of mathematics this is impossible so the 'number' of infinity is just a 'what if'. Its not neccesarily a huge number, its just the mathemeticians way of saying maybe there is something more, we just haven't thought of it.

Man, I need to go to sleep, I should have never been able to answer that.

yes nova, the term "half of forever" can be quite a strange paradox.

NICE ELVIS! W000T

<topic drift>
mad max, ess-k, nova --

mathematics actually does have some ways of dealing with
infinity. Georg Cantor gave things a jump about 100 years
ago and it's been growing since then. Nowadays people like
Rudy Rucker are even writing novels with stuff about infinity
in them.

There's an old story (I think David Hilbert came up with it)
about a hotel that as infintely many rooms. They get all filled
up but then when a new guest shows up, they just have
everyone move up to the next highest room number so they
first room opens up. Or you could have another infinity of
people show up and have all the hotel guests move to the
room that is double their current room number so all the
odd number rooms (still in infinte number of them)
are empty now to accomodate the infinity of new guests.

If you feel like hurting your brain some more, look up
some stuff about transfinite numbers and you'll see there
are some 'levels' of infinity that are 'bigger' than others.
</topic drift>

So I don't think adding any programmers would help the
winbolo viewer get done faster, if it is going to take
half of inifinty already. especially when you take into
account the "mythical man month" effect, or the law
of diminshing returns...

my brain hurts now....one theory i enjoyed reading about however was the fact that there are paralell universes.......each with a slight difference..and infinite ones...for examplem in one universe i am the king of winbolo and everyone hails me. its true! or so they say....
Nov 23, 2003 19:51
sounds like the 'many worlds' interpretation of quantum mechanics
which is definitely another topic that is good for brain-hurting

HAIL ELVIS!

Let's not even start with the super string theory, I guess.

BAck to the original topic, Elvis, I think a log viewer is a great idea.

The only thing is logging messages. Sometimes after a game, a winbolo game is a nice place to chat stuff, and share stuff you wouldn't really want the world to view on a website. Futhermore, during a game, sometimes we say stuff in the passion of the moment that we would regret reading on a website later - so when it comes to logging messsages, I would cast my vote with no, no private (especially private) or public messages logged to the website. This tank likes his privacy.

Everything else looks great!

I would have to agree with fi on 1, no logging of messages.

For 2&3, given the file size this seems to take, I would suggest lite/full versions if possible. I think knowing tank/base load is interesting but not necessary if you are just watching the game unfold. If this does not increase the file much, then leave it in.
