Map creator

Jan 18, 2004 04:09 Map creator
Since there has been a boom in the map creation industry as of late. I was just wondering if someone was to program a new map editor what you guys would like to see in it for features. No matter how weird the idea I wouldn't mind hearing your opinions.

perhaps if you list all the features you already have in mind ... that will give us a starting point for goodies we would like.

you act like I already have ideas for this :D

One should probably have most of the features in BoloReich, like a map centerer, thumbnial viewer, flip selected squares/rotate selected squares.
Some other features I have in mind:

In addition to the thumbnial viewer, a mechanism that saves the thumbnial as a pic file.

The ability to cut and paste parts of maps bewteen 2 running instances of the map creator.

And include some random map options, like the ones from wytas's WinBolo RandomMap Generator, and some more.

My 2 sense. (not that i have much)

Btw, for some reason whenever I put the word thumbnial(spelled correctly) into the reply, it shows up blank. Must be a bug or something.

Zooming in & out was a nice feature of BMapEdit. There was thumbnail, 2x, 3x, 5x and 8x(I believe this was the largest you could get--the way you'd see it in a game.) I'm not too sure about these figures, but it make making maps a tad easier.
What'd also be nice is if you could change the bolo icons (forest, grass, deep water, etc.) into simple colors (green for forest, bright green for grass) so that you could easily see where you were putting shit. Sometimes I get confused when I'm trying to place shallow water because it's oftentimes hard to tell where you're putting deep water and shallow water.
I just woke up, so if this makes no sense, I'm sorry.

Any tool in paint would also be a nice feature. Paint bucket, circle, etc. In addition to these tools what would be nice is a "lassoo" type of selector that would shrink in to hug the lines of whatever you selected. In addition to this, a click & drag option for selected things would also be nice. Copy & paste in BoloReich gets old after a while.

yes, copy and paste needs to be changed...otherwise you have to count squares ect...

also, for any object properties, you should be able to just click a little picture of what you want rather then have to fool around with numbers.

I um happened to find a list of somethings here, if anyone wants to add on feel free :)
Zoom
Undo
Flood Toll
Click and Drag
Copy and Paste
Flip/Rotate
Quad maker(make one quad choose the middle....it makes 3 more)
Lasso Tool
Shapes
Pillfire Range
Templates (like a blank chew circle, etc)
Centered
Import from picture (opena picture it tries making a map out of it)
Export(exports the map as a bmp,jpg etc....in any zoom)
Random Map
colorblocks not pictures are farther zoom ranges
Thumbnail
Probly more stuff I'm forgetting but this is my todo list for now

Also, for those interested in the LOOK of a map, the BR thumbnail's colors are WAY different than the ones you see on the game loader window of bolo. I'd like to see the colors match. This is a minor request.
Jan 19, 2004 01:13
that wouldn't be a problem
I forgot to mention
photoshop like gui, open multiple maps etc
detailed help file
and gridlines

if youre making huge sections of terrain, its a pain in the ass to take 90 years to cover the whole page with blox or w/e it is ur doing. so yes, zoom is good, and you shoudl be able to still add stuff when its like that.
Jan 19, 2004 01:43
of course you would still be able to add stuff.....a full map zoom would be pointless without it
Jan 19, 2004 01:45
ok...jus makin sure :D

I want to be able to view the map as a 600x600 pixel picture on my screen. The thumbnailz on boloreich seem sooo small (or maybe i just haven't figgurd out how to make them bigger yet.)

Paint bucket would be better for that.

In BmapEdit, if you saved a map in the creator, two versions of that map would show up--The BME version and the map version. It made opening and editing your maps a bit more convienient.
Jan 20, 2004 06:32
umm not sure if this qualifies as an addition or just a question, but can you make it so map files can be double-clicked and then the map editor would run with the map loaded in it? With BoloReich I've managed to get it to open when i dblclick a map, but it opens to a blank map. If this cant be done, then it should be added. Oh and also the movement of pills, starts, and bases when you cut and paste stuff, cuz they never come with the terrain. ud still need to protect it from goin over the limit of pills and starts and bases, but have it so that if theres enough that it doesnt go over the limit theyre copied, and if there isnt enough, they arent. capische :? ? i didnt spell that right...

Nice list of options SJ. I especially want to point out this one which I think would be very nice to have:

Also be sure and use the correct location size for the outer mine field (Reich makes it too big so maps tend to spill over into the field if they are near the edge. (Reich is something like 12 sqares too big on left/right and 9 squares too big on top/bottom)

Might also be nice to include 'pill firing radius' circle, so you know how far on the map the pills with shoot.

Import from picture is a regular feature of the macbolo editors.

Yup, I use to use it and liked the feature.
Jan 21, 2004 03:02
and the pill range was on the list already :)

I have a map editor request if a new one is to be written: Enlarge the 'drag squares' to double size on the bottom and right sides of the screen. They are so small, that when I'm doing things quickly I miss them a little and paint a fat rectangle of tarmac or water over my carefully - designed map. With bigger drag areas, I will miss less and it will be easier to scroll through the map. Maybe it's just me, heh, but I seem to run into this aggravating lil' problem over and over.
Mar 16, 2004 02:37
lol, no that happens to me alot, its not just your dwindling eyesight.....and instead of this acro maybe we can just have an "undo" button?
Mar 16, 2004 03:04
Yes......make an undo button..that would solve it. TY Q.
Mar 16, 2004 20:13
it would probably be better to have a "history" of the last 20 or so events, that way rather than simply "undoing" you could move back a number of events and start over..... photoshop has that feature and its very very nice.
