How do you usually make maps?

Jan 19, 2004 05:28 How do you usually make maps?
Strangely, one day I was sitting by myself and thinking and all of the sudden I thought... not everyone uses the same technique to make maps! You can imagine my shock at this sudden epiphany, but this led me to another thought: what do they do? So here I am, askin' y'all.

Personally, I work from the inside out and I put blocks of road and grass where they look like good places to put them. I place the forest around the outside edge and then from there I decide where I should place my bases and pills according to availability of resources. Then I slap on my logo and I upload.

Now it's your turn!

i take a basic shape then just stick trees and bases n shit on it. (basic shape is usually the shape from a well known map, so i dont have to take 1000000 years to make it, and discover its one or two blox off.

A lot of my maps have been modifications (my Chew Toy series comes to mind) of existing maps. Sometimes the best place to start is by taking an already decent map and modifying it. In the case of Fitzhu, I changed the layout to provide more of a dynamic game.

Most of my Open style maps, however, were created from scratch. I knew how open games were played and made maps that would put focus on conflict in the right spots.

In short, I do tend to work from inward out as thats where most of the game takes place. If I wanted to create a map something along the lines of Wild Duck's Nest then I would tend to give the map an overall shape and then work inward.

My main theory of map making is trying to predict where conflict will happen and what kind of game will result in a map design. In the case of Transatlanticism, the outcome was totally different than what I originally expected. Getting veterans to play early renderings of your maps really helps to refine the rougher aspects of the map.

I like to make symmetrical maps, even though I don't upload them. I've never had a good enough map to upload. lol at least I don't think so. Anyhow, it's a lot of fun if you build from scratch, but modifying them is a little more boring. You have to go with the origional design to keep familiarity, like Chew Toy 3, 3.2, so on. I like it so the players create it the way they like it, it's more fun to play on then.
