Dimmer, less massive stars, or 'red dwarfs' may slowly cool and 'go out' when they run out of hydrogen. They become 'black dwarves'. More massive stars may instead 'balloon up to be a 'red giants' before running out of fuel and casting off the outer layers, leaving only a rapidly-spinning superdense core not much larger than the earth or possibly much smaller.
