Announcement of 1x1 tourny

Nov 17, 2004 12:40 Announcement of 1x1 tourny
Alright, there seems to be a bit of interest, and hopefully this post will get people to commit. Here is how it works. The people in the tourny pay 5 bucks, via paypal. We need at least 10 people, if there are not 10 people committed, there simply won't be any tourny. the money will be split among the top 3 players. first place getting approximately 50%, second place getting approximately 30% and the third place getting 20%. The matchups between people will be best out of three. Each player will pick a map from a large list of allowed maps (prob around a hundred) and the tie breaker will be done on a random map, generated via irc script from the list. In the rare instance of a tie, say all three games are tied and don't end in two hours each (highly highly unlikely) then a fourth game will be played again on a random map, until somebody wins. Now, if you would like to enter, or are interested, you will have to email me at -> underdog@winbolo.net.

Now I also realize not everyone can play at the same time of day, or on the same days. In order to counter this, in the email to me, tell me what days of week and what hours of the day of those days of the week you can play. Use GMT+0 timezone please (less hassel for me)

I will look over the list, and if there 10 or more people that can play, and are able to play at the same time, meaning there won't be a pair that will never be able to play eachother, then the tourny will be started. All players will be asked to pay the 5 dollar entrance fee. Then, the matchups will be randomly made for the tournament, using a script, or some other random way that we can be assured can not be cheated.

The email you send to underdog@winbolo.net should include the following.

Your name, player name, and what days and times you can play. also, you can ask what ever question, or just ask here.

The tournament structure, like the grid thing with all the lines will be created before the matchups are decided and after I have players confirmed. The spots will be assigned 1 2 3 4 5... etc, and filled in with names as they are generated via random method.

Also, even if you lose your first match, you still have a chance for third place. people who lose will again be matched up with others, and a third place will be decided amongst them, once first and second are decided. This will be similar to how the Olympics decide third place. More information on how third place is decided will be made, after I look at how the Olympics did it.

If there are a minimum of 10 people willing to enter this, do as i said above, and email underdog@winbolo.net with the info i stated.

One last thing, if it is exactly ten people who play, first place will get 25 bucks, second gets 15, third gets 10. The worst that can happen is you lose 5 bucks. Otherwise you have a 3/10 chance of winning money. I think that is pretty cool.

I think I am pretty cool, but is this really the matter at hand?
Nov 18, 2004 01:21
Everyone sign up!!
Nov 18, 2004 01:55
Damnit, I was hoping it would be a tournament that everyone could join. O well, fuck this.

How are not-so-good players supposed to be encouraged to join this shit if they have to pay and lose that money....... in fact...... that is gambling and it's against the law.

I am glad someone else shares my opinions. They must realize that very few people will enter as there are only a few people which know that they actually have some odds at winning money. Also, it is not against the law to gamble on sports, especially if you are participating in them. If people want to have a bet on who will win this year in hockey, is it against the law? (even though there is not hockey this year:-( ). If it is, almost anyone I have ever known is guilty and should be fined. Perhaps it is against the law where you live, Q-man (although, IIRC, you're a VIslander and live in British Columbia like me), but you must remember that gambling is controlled by the province if in Canada or the state if in yankeeville, so it varys greatly depending upon where you live.

I don't see how it is gambling Q. Lots of sports require an entrance fee when there is a prize of monetary value involved. This is no different. If you guys love this game so much and think you are top dog (like so many of you out there do) what is your problem with giving up a few bucks, with the chance of getting more back in return. Quit your sniveling and step up to the plate or stfu.

And those of you with trust issues, underdog is a long standing member of the community, he's not going to fuck you around for a measly $50, it's not worth it, he loves the community too much.

If I still played I would gladly put my 5 bucks in to play in a tourney.

Anyone with a bank account can create themselves a paypal account so that’s not an excuse as to why you can't. 5 dollars isn't going to break the bank, just forgo your daily chips and pop for a day and put the $5 towards doing something you love doing, playing winbolo.

You all haven't realized, what if me and ud are placed in the same bracket?? If we are then that gives you kids a chance to get 2nd or 1st if you fuck the person in 1st up. If you are obsessing over 5 dollars you have serious problems, 5 dollars is barely even money. You can go to a pizza place and get an extra large pizza for about 5 dollars. If you're a little kid that wants to participate in the damn tourny, ask your mom or daddy to lend you $5 damn dollars. Yall need to stop being wussies and grow up. When you are old enough to go into casino's are you going to fold if you have to spend over $5 dollars?? Life is about taking risks and living it on the edge. So live it on the edge for once, i'm sure you can find a way to live about a $5 entry fee.

Suck it up,

This is something you should not see from a tournament director.
Ren, you've got to admit that sometimes when things don't go your way, you tend to lash out and act on anger or in spite, same goes for UD (and others). This in itself is a main reason why some players are hesitant to engage in such a hassle as opening a PayPal account, dealing with THIS ^, and above all paying money to play a game in which they could very well play for free while trolling.
Also, please know that not everyone believes $5 is "barely even money", for some, its 75% of an hours work.

Good luck.

Edited for lack of better words.

Hi, I'm just a newbie. I now that in a tourney I will just keep the last place and I don't want to just give you 5$ ..... but I would be very happy to participate at your tourney. (And I don't like very much to use Paypal...)

Why don't you organize a free tourney to rate the 20 "best" players ? (20 for exemple) These 20 players will be able then to pay the 5$ to finish the tourney with your rules. This style of tourney will allow all the community to participate. I think it is very important to let the newbies like me integer the group ; not to win, we can't, but for fun !!! And for the future of WinBolo... Are we not all playing for fun :?:  :D
Nov 18, 2004 13:26
These days, if I order a large pizza and hand 'em a $20, all I get back is a $5 and a couple of miserable $1s.
Nov 18, 2004 15:26
Hm... maybe I just don't want to throw my money away. And there's no need to be slanderous people.... acting like I'm fat or something because I "apparently" buy chips and pop everyday. Uh...no. You see, I don;t want to join this tournament because.... it's a big fat stupid hassle..... sky's tourney was better because he had an actual website and there was no entry fee shit where I have to make a fuck-ass paypal account. Why would lesser players want to throw their money away just to get beat up in a game.... no wonder Winbolo is going nowhere..... no one is helping the newbs become any better. So go ahead and have your tournament. I am keeping my money for something more important like buying Christmas presents. Instead of giving it to an un-friendly computer-game community.

Btw, I'll bet you idiots are used to spending money all the time with buying your alchahol and getting wasted, and your ciggarettes and getting lung cancer?

Well, have fun. Enjoy lung cancer.

Peace

Suck it up,

I'm not very worried about 5 bucks here. I have about $100 in my bank account. In fact... *goes and grabs wallet* look I have a 5 dollar bill right here. Am I going to waste it? No. Every bit counts. Have fun with your two-man tourney.
Nov 18, 2004 19:04
I don't care for the entrance fee aspect of this. That just makes an alarm bell go off for me. Q has a valid point as well, why would players who don't stand much of a chance participate? Granted 1st 2nd and 3rd places will get more then their money back. Are there really 10 players around that think their good enough to place? I just feel the entrance fee is a very bad idea.
My two cents worth.

At any rate I would probably join if I had the time to participate.

I agree also that a fee is a bad idea. I don't think we have enough good players for an elimination tournament to really work like it should, but I think people (including myself) will play in a tourny just for the sake of playing.

I think an ongoing IBL is really the way to go with bolo... Which will group people with others of similar ability... Sadly, I don't think we have enough people to make that work.
Nov 18, 2004 22:58
As I have said before and will repeat now...If you are going to have a tourny I think that you should hold off until about the beginning or half way through summer when all the players come back and shake off their "rust" from not playing over awhile and if You arrange a date when the toruny will start now it Might motivate people that join up now or that Havent played in awhile "like myself" to start playing again and attemt to get better (Yet I doubt I will) I still think It would be fun....Well I guess thats it...
*My Humbelest apologioes for the bad sentence/paragraph structure and blah blah blah*lol

Okay, you don't care. That's fine, I wasn't specifically talking to "you", i was talking to all winboloers in general. Also, if your going to discourage people about the tourny, please don't post anything negative in this topic.

Respectfully,

Funny you should say that Ren, seeing as how you are in the top three already and already have a good chance at the money. You seem to have forgotten all the others who are not as good as you, have no chance of winning the money, and will certainly not pay a five dollar entry fee to be won by you or underdog.

P.S. Underdog u cunt, unban me from #winbolo
Nov 19, 2004 01:50
what if 10 people don't join.....then ud just jacks the 45 dollars and says fuck you all and buys himself some pr0n.....I don't trust any of you winboloers as far as i can throw you. And I'm a skinny kid so there is really no chance of anyone getting thrown. Other then that his idea is good and sound, is this 5 dollars american or some other foriegn currency.....5 dollars canadian would be a hell of a deal. And Q, just send them some money, I'll send you some cheats and you'll walk away with 30 bucks :)

well, being as I was the organizer of the winbolo IBL, I can tell you right now that the maturity level in this community is not high enough to support a IBL properly. Quite honestly, the fee is so that people will show up and play their games, if your afraid to lose 5 dollars, then I think maybe you have some priority issues anyways. Perhaps people will attempt to get better so that they may have a hope of winning? ....

if you guys are so snivelly about your money, why not just have it so that the top half of players get double their money, bottom half get nothing. Perhaps you guys are good enough to finish in the top 10 of a 20 man tourney? ..... maybe not .. maybe thats too risky too ... better just do without the fee that way people will fuck off and never play their games, deja vu.
