Flash (swf) map viewer

Jan 26, 2005 02:05 Flash (swf) map viewer
I brought up this idea in another post last year, so I thought I would put it in it's own, cuz I care that much.

http://winbolo.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1368&start=0&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=

But what I think would be really kewl, would be a Flash/swf file that could view map files. It would need to create a vector version of a map, which would allow zooming, as well as could be resized (an entire webpage!).

In case someone out there knows how to design in Macromedia Flash, or has a friend that needs a kewl project...

Wonka has with a map decode page

Winbolo also includes a Map File Format.txt

So I see two main parts to the project:
- Create vector versions of the tiles
- Create code/logic to convert/display the map

Work those contacts & Godspeed!

Make sure Cool Fool doesn't know about this, or else your whole project is doomed.

Yes, having FireIce on board is handicap enough

What do you basically want to do? Make a .swf viewer that would be used to view your bolo map files in vector format so you can zoom in without it becoming pixilated?

exactly...

No it's Safe With [a] Fork. Don't ask how I know these things, it's a touchy subject.

look for min's boloreloaded skin. it's somewere. It's got ass-kicking graphics.

If someone does a good job at designing all the tiles, I'd consider writing the software for viewing it. It might make a nice replacement for the Cartographer map window. ;)

Hey Ian! Nice to see you again. I've been having lots of fun with Cartographer. :-)

So I tried all sorts of ways to try to phrase this question without it making it sound like I was a greedy bastard: Would you be willing to release another version of Cartographer? I'd be content with you just getting rid of the annoying feature that doesn't allow you to save maps under certain circumstances. If you've got too much on your plate right now or whatever, that's fine too.

ianbanks is back ! :D

I would enjoy to help you ! I think that it will need a lot of time to draw the tiles and you want to share the job. Then, send me here alain@winbolo.net in what it consists exactly : size, files type, names... (I don't know... lol). I think that i'm able to do that job. :D

My whole idea was to create a map viewer that could be located on a webpage, that would allow you to zoom in maps, enlarge the size of the viewing window, add things like pill shooting range, and being able to create maps like this would be very nice, as a replacement for WOME.

Oh course I would like winbolo be "skinned" with flash, so that the game window could be vector expanded all we wanted to, and the various panels could be arranged as desired, but let's not put all of our eggs in one basket.

So who can create the vector tiles?

The most accessible format I can think of would be SVG. The "paths" in SVG (lines and bezier curves) can be converted to most things (PDF, other vector drawing programs, etc).

"Inkscape" might be a good program to do it.

Thanks, I look if I can do something with that... :)

sheeps wonders if anyone will work on this....

I tried to work with ianbanks to draw the tiles in vector shapes, but I'm not enough skilled with Illustrator or others softwares... Sorry, sheeps and ianbanks, but I stopped to work on it...

Maybe we can use the current tiles for the first version and add the vector tiles later? I dont care if its pixelated. It would just be nice start.

Would that make it a bit easier?

It was a bit surprising to me, as well. Usually I have to be restrained, not asked. Like that time at the water park. 'Member that?

Yes, I think... Confirm me, then, in which file format you want the tiles... I will try to draw them if I can find some time...

You can just grab them from the default skin bmp (skin.bmp)

which you can grab off: http://winbolo.us/skins.asp

Of course bmp is a horrid format given the large filesize, I would think jpg would work fine at first, although png might be best long-term format.

I would think having one image for all the graphics would be easier... but it's up to you and how it would be programmed. I'm no expert with that.
