Goodbye ... tired of the bullsh*t
I have played Bolo on and off since 1993 (MacBolo, Stuart's weekly dev builds, etc.) and I used to preach it to all of my friends who happen to spend mega-bucks on commercial game titles looking for kickass game play and going away disappointed. I have spent wads of my own cash looking for the "next best thing" over the years, but it has always been Bolo that I have come back to. It is a simple 2D tank game, nothing ultra-special on the surface, but it was multiplayer "before multiplayer was cool" ... and it was not free-for-all multiplayer, rather specifically designed to be a cooperative team-based game -- a first of its kind.
...but now, the game play (regardless of whether you prefer stricts or opens) has mostly descended into petty personal attacks, trolling, hacking, etc. It seems as if a single game cannot go by where the merits of the strategy and action stand up on their own and it ends with a simple "gg". (In the rare case that a game becomes the priority over the individual personalities, it is now a surprise rather than being the normal expectation that it should be).
MacBolo *never* was like this ... even the legendary players who had that certain "attitude" (i.e. God, Severian, Agent Orange, ...) at least respected the game and the people enough to not be a dick when choosing to offer constructive advice or a recap of what went wrong for the team. A tip or comment never had to be prefaced by a "you f*cking suck" in order to get a point across.
Sadly, that is no longer the case with this WinBolo incarnation. Now, the priority appears to be on individual personalities attempting to assert themselves *above* the game play -- thinking they are bigger than Bolo itself. I don't have to name a single handle here for most everyone to know who I am referring to. Those people make themselves plainly obvious (verbally and otherwise) to others around them during a game.
Stuart, et al, would be f*cking appalled at what this has become.
I don't see any hope for it turning around, so sadly for me, I'm out for good. I want to just play the game for the action, strategy, and communication/coordination (mistakes and all, mostly mine), but those games are few and far between now.
For those that still respect the game and the people, I say cheers and good luck to you. May you continue to find the enjoyment of the game that I unfortunately no longer can. Everyone else ... "you f*cking suck" (wink, wink).
