Goodbye ... tired of the bullsh*t

May 16, 2006 06:34 Goodbye ... tired of the bullsh*t
I have played Bolo on and off since 1993 (MacBolo, Stuart's weekly dev builds, etc.) and I used to preach it to all of my friends who happen to spend mega-bucks on commercial game titles looking for kickass game play and going away disappointed. I have spent wads of my own cash looking for the "next best thing" over the years, but it has always been Bolo that I have come back to. It is a simple 2D tank game, nothing ultra-special on the surface, but it was multiplayer "before multiplayer was cool" ... and it was not free-for-all multiplayer, rather specifically designed to be a cooperative team-based game -- a first of its kind.

...but now, the game play (regardless of whether you prefer stricts or opens) has mostly descended into petty personal attacks, trolling, hacking, etc. It seems as if a single game cannot go by where the merits of the strategy and action stand up on their own and it ends with a simple "gg". (In the rare case that a game becomes the priority over the individual personalities, it is now a surprise rather than being the normal expectation that it should be).

MacBolo *never* was like this ... even the legendary players who had that certain "attitude" (i.e. God, Severian, Agent Orange, ...) at least respected the game and the people enough to not be a dick when choosing to offer constructive advice or a recap of what went wrong for the team. A tip or comment never had to be prefaced by a "you f*cking suck" in order to get a point across.

Sadly, that is no longer the case with this WinBolo incarnation. Now, the priority appears to be on individual personalities attempting to assert themselves *above* the game play -- thinking they are bigger than Bolo itself. I don't have to name a single handle here for most everyone to know who I am referring to. Those people make themselves plainly obvious (verbally and otherwise) to others around them during a game.

Stuart, et al, would be f*cking appalled at what this has become.

I don't see any hope for it turning around, so sadly for me, I'm out for good. I want to just play the game for the action, strategy, and communication/coordination (mistakes and all, mostly mine), but those games are few and far between now.

For those that still respect the game and the people, I say cheers and good luck to you. May you continue to find the enjoyment of the game that I unfortunately no longer can. Everyone else ... "you f*cking suck" (wink, wink).

X, its been a while since we've played together. I remember a lot of mass allies vs us in the past though. They were good times, i'm gonna miss you man. Peace

Talk about a dying relationship.

Are you writing this letter to people who don't know what Bolo is?

> but it was multiplayer "before multiplayer was cool"

huh? Are you quoting someone?

I don't know about anyone else, but I am appalled at the language in this Dear-John letter.

Does somebody need a tissue?

A good illustration of his point.

indeed, zzz, u mess up a lot of games, if not all of them in some way shape or form. and u do it on all levels. if your not cheating or not holding, your talking shit about the next guy, with no respect or moral at all. i think it would be safe for me to say that if u left bolo to never return it would be too soon. u are a true asshole. i also think its safe to say that nobody likes playing with u. the only reason people ally u is because u do play this game with some skill. u would think that if so meny people dislike things about u it would click in your head "hey, im a dick, man maybe i should not be so harsh and ignorant." im not saying in some bolo saint, i have fought and screamd and insulted my ally as well, but in the end i still like playing with that person, theres still a mist of respect i give eveyone. its players like u that make a great game like bolo no fun to play. im sure u dont care, and thats my point. i really hope u dont act like this to "real" people. because sooner or later someone is going to put u in your place. thats not a threat, its a warning man. u need to chill. X is not the first, and he will deff. not be the last person u drive away from this game.

and to X, dude, off and on no matter it was fun playing with u. loved the insaine opens in the thrunder dome. take it easy and play a game here or there.

I don't think I've ever played against you x-man, but your point comes through loud and clear.

There are two ways we can get rid of potty-mouth trash-talking cheaters in our games:

1) spawn password-protected games where the password is given only to honourable players
2) the instant a player does something dishonourable, everyone leaves the game.

Method one is difficult because who determines who is 'honourable'? Then the logistics of creating and communicating passwords is awkward.

Method two is the one I currently use in opens. Since I can't enjoy the game when it's overtaken with ignorant idiots, I just leave. In strict tournament games I will play it out, but make a note of the other players' courtesy or lack thereof in case I should want to avoid them in future.

For those of you who wish to flame me on the basis of 'free speech' I will say in advance that I'm all for your free speech as long as I'm free to switch it off if it annoys me. If you can do without my friendship and loyalty: lie, cheat and swear like a lumberjack. I'll find others who share my preference for courtesy and fair play.

Good words.

Sorry to see you go X-man. I always enjoyed your opens and your maps. Good Times.

Unfortunately my playtime has substantially decreased for the same reasons. There's a lot to be said about the newer generation(s), and I'm sorry to say, the good doesn't outweigh the bad.

Take it easy.

wow, another one of these "I'm leaving" posts .... if your going to leave, just leave. The only way that winbolo players attitudes will change is if someone makes them change. Noone is in a position to do this. So quit complaining, turn off your newswire and just play. Or leave. Alot of better people than you have left this game x, to be perfectly honest, noone will notice your gone. Besides, you know as well as everyone else, that you will be back. Everyone comes back.

I know how you feel X, its not that great seeing 5 different vulgarities just by reading the names of tanks! The constant badgering and "putting-downs" of players that failed to snatch that "right" pill in the strict. But. nonetheless, I will continue playing because they don't know any better and by no means should I be affected by them to effect my withdrawal front the game.

>I have always like playing with you in the Thunderdome

DING DING DING! He hit the nail on the head ladies and gentlemen. Too bad no one will listen.

Besides...Min is right, you'll be back. Everybody comes back. In fact, I bet you're reading this which means you've already come back and can't completely let go, but whatever. Even I putz around once in a while in IRC and a few opens which is why you'll never catch me writing one of these "I'm leaving" posts. Although I bet a lot of people wish I would...

Bah, I don't think ANYONE wants you to leave, DAllen. Alexm was messin around in IRC the other day. You and him I miss a bunch. It's good to talk to you guys once in a while again.
As for X-Man, I think I played a few opens with you. You have skills, man. Don't let some freak of nature drive you away. Play some games. Save the trash talk and talk with your skills.

A skilled player gets more respect and is listened to more than a trash-talking moron that can't figure out when to shut the hell up.

Yes, Acro. That means you.

Notice the embarrassing indecision combined with short, simple sentences which only a true retard could manage. :D

I remember lots of people acting like dicks in MacBolo. I'm sure I was one of them more than a few times. I remember checking out the old r.g.b. posts a while back and reminiscing over the old flame wars. But, in the early days there were usually enough games going on that you could avoid those players if it really bothered you. I don't know if Winbolo has the player pool to allow that option, but who knows? A new release could change things.

ok? so? your leaving. big fucking idea. i don't really care either way. if a group of people are making the game not fun. don't play with them. pretty easy eh? you fucking pussy ass baby. i hope you cry yourself to sleep and died.
Jun 04, 2006 01:49
Hard8's post proves that you can always come back around.

And as far as the player pool goes, I think it's slowly drying up. I remember when I started playing maybe five years ago, the room would have up to 35 clients or so on a busy night and a lot of them would play. The channel still probably gets that many clients on a busy night but face it, not many play.

Xman typically stayed in the opens, however. I'm not really sure what's worse: the trash talk in massive opens or the post-game-blame after intense stricts.
Jun 07, 2006 07:53 good old days?
all of this good old days talk is just silly to me ... i played bolo 10 years ago, and there was just as much random interpersonal bullshit back then as their is now. why does everyone wear rose-colored glasses when it comes to the past?
