New Open-Source Borg

Nov 23, 2005 22:07 New Open-Source Borg
So there have been stirrings of people wanting useful brains for winbolo. Or maybe there haven't been, but it makes me feel better if I think there have. With that in mind, jhood has started making a new borg to replace the message bar and all its scrolling messages which only seem to work well for calling. But better yet, it's not just jhood's borg. It's yours. You can write it.

We have a SourceForge project for the borg now. The project is completely community-driven, so if you want a feature and know how to implement it, you can just put it in. It's still very much alpha, but now we can get more people working on it together. If you have brain-writing skills, definitely sign up over there and help us out. Hopefully we'll be able to set up projects for other brains if this turns out well.

I'm generic_user on SourceForge, by the way. jhood and I are admins on the project, so email one of us if you want to join up.

Submit a patch (we will add your code/product to the borg)

It should be pointed out that you dont need programming experience to participate, theres areas such as user interface design to sound production to concept ideas that need you.

I also want to point out that I hope this will become the starting point of many more (possibly open-source -- its up to the developer) projects for Bolo on all three platforms; Windows, Linux and the Macintosh. Theres tons of ideas for projects, one of mine include sending data from WinBolo's brain to a Bolo brain, thus allowing the two to interact and bridging the platform gap. This would be quite a large project which will require many developers, hence the SourceForge.net idea. Another one includes porting the Standard autopilot from Mac to Windows/Linux.

Please note, that while an open development structure like this means source code flowing freely, it in no way means Bolo becoming open source.. just thought that should be stressed. :)

wow, one minute jhood drops off the face of the planet and the next hes back up here telling us he has a open-source winbolo development thing going...

nice work guys, this could really get the communtity going again, not that i can really do anything but hey, this is still a really great idea.

:D :D :D :D

You can do lots of things, Jason#8's doing the website, DogHouse types everything up and administers stuff, Min's given sample code and countless thoughts on what/how to improve, Nova - Alex - Brando - LRL - Acro (among others) - all provide input and supply great ideas and bug reports. If one were to post a thread asking for brain/borg ideas it would be six pages long, just read all the posts in the Feature Requests forum.
This
community
is
full
of
good
ideas.

Thanks for the post and download, Kingage.

Would like to mention that version 0.10 is stable.

I was wondering, will the messages still go in there if newswire is turned off? or if not is there a way to fuck with winbolo so they just don't go in. I like the idea of this project, but well the scrolling like mad text still annoys the hell out of me. Also a way to distinguish between say global text and private team text would be nice, and/or a filtering option.

why don't you download it and test it?

Better yet..
Typical newswire messages aren't sent to the borg regardless of menu selection, only player to player messages are - however with "Newswire messages" checked off though the menu no messages at all are sent though the brain interface (I could be wrong though). One way to rid the game of the scrolling text completly would be to shorten the WinBolo window by about 64 pixels (I tried drawing ontop of it but WinBolo redrew ontop of mine).
Selecting users on the userlist (looks just like mIRC) sends private messages to those players (strings can be colorized), although in the lastest version this crashes WinBolo even though it worked in the previous release. The stuff I have planned for release tomarrow flashes the window when "calling" is used.

If I wasn't impossibly lazy I might have put some work in this.

Is that a double negative? I'm too lazy to find out.

Who fucking cares.

because that would involve installing winbolo Min, and i'd rather take a magnet to my hard drive
